Decoding the principles underlying neuronal information processing necessitates the emergence of techniques and methodologies to monitor multiscale brain networks in behaving animals over long periods of time. Novel advances in biophotonics, specifically progress in multiphoton microscopy, combined with the development of optical indicators for neuronal activity have provided the possibility to concurrently track brain functions at scales ranging from individual neurons to thousands of neurons across connected brain regions. This Review presents state-of-the-art multiphoton imaging modalities and optical indicators for in vivo brain imaging, highlighting recent advancements and current challenges in the field.

Purpose: The Oncology Care Model (OCM), a value-based payment model for traditional Medicare beneficiaries with cancer, yielded total spending reductions that were outweighed by incentive payments, resulting in net losses to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. We studied whether the OCM yielded spillover effects in total episode spending, utilization, and quality among commercially insured and Medicare Advantage (MA) members, who were not targeted by the program.

Patients And Methods: This observational study used administrative claims from a large national payer, yielding 157,189 total patients with commercial insurance or MA with solid malignancies who initiated 229,376 systemic anticancer therapy episodes before (2012-2015) and during (2016-2021) the OCM at 125 OCM-participating practices (a subset of total OCM practices) and a 1:10 propensity-matched set of 860 non-OCM practices.

Disrupted or atypical light-dark cycles disrupts synchronization of endogenous circadian clocks to the external environment; extensive circadian rhythm desynchrony promotes adverse health outcomes. Previous studies suggest that disrupted circadian rhythms promote neuroinflammation and neuronal damage post-ischemia in otherwise healthy mice, however, few studies to date have evaluated these health risks with aging. The nexus between eosinophils and microbes is attracting increasing attention. We previously showed that airway administration of sterile microbial products contained in dust collected from traditional dairy farms virtually abrogated bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) eosinophilia and other cardinal asthma phenotypes in allergen-sensitized specific pathogen-free (SPF) mice. Interestingly, comparable inhibition of allergen-induced BAL eosinophilia and promotion of airway barrier integrity were found upon administration of a sterile, pharmacological-grade bacterial lysate, OM-85, to the airway compartment of allergen-sensitized SPF mice.

Exposure to artificial light outside of the typical solar day, such as during the night, may impair aspects of physiology and behavior in human and non-human animals.
