Fluorescence-based sentinel lymph node mapping and lymphography evaluation: results from the IHU-IRCAD-EAES EURO-FIGS registry.

Background: The identification of metastatic lymph nodes is one of the most important prognostic factors in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging has been successfully used in GI tumors to detect the lymphatic pathway and the sentinel lymph node (SLN), facilitating fluorescence image-guided surgery (FIGS) with the purpose to achieve a correct nodal staging. The aim of this study was to analyze the current results of NIRF SLN navigation and lymphography through data collected in the EURO-FIGS registry.

Pure pancreaticocutaneous fistula shunted into the urinary bladder. Lesson learned by an incomplete, original attempt.

Because pancreaticocystostomy is a method of exocrine secretion management in pancreas transplantation, a legitimate question is whether a pure pancreatic fistula could be shunted into the bladder. After duodenopancreatectomy for cancer, a pancreaticojejunostomy leakage was treated by pancreas-saving anastomosis disconnection. The resulting pure pancreaticocutaneous fistula was later diverted into the bladder using a Denver valved-pump device.

Quality of life assessment in geriatric surgery.

An excessive number of studies on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has rendered results often contradictory and difficult to interpret. HRQOL evaluation in the aged is even more difficult, due to intrinsic conceptual and methodological problems. Since no structured instruments are available for use in geriatric surgery, it would be necessary either to work out a new specific instrument or to adapt/adopt an already existing method.

Oral bioavailability in sheep of albendazole from a suspension and from a solution containing hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin.

Albendazole (ABZ) is a benzimidazole derivative with a broad spectrum of activity against human and animal helminthe parasites. ABZ has a very poor aqueous solubility. This study shows that hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) is able to form inclusion complexes with ABZ and that is able to increase its aqueous solubility.

Medication noncompliance: an issue to consider in the drug selection process.

Patient medication noncompliance is a major public health problem that represents a significant cost to our health care system. Health care professionals--through counseling programs, and the pharmaceutical industry--through various improvements in drug products, have helped to improve medication noncompliance. Yet, additional research needs to be conducted on noncompliant behavior and into methods to improve it.

Comparison of home occult blood tests and interaction of tests with ibuprofen.

The interaction of ibuprofen with home tests for occult blood was evaluated, and the accuracy of these tests was determined by validating the results with a specific quantitative assay of stool blood. Three home occult blood tests were evaluated: Early Detector, Fleet Detecatest, and CS-T Coloscreen Self Test. Fourteen men 19 to 35 years of age were instructed on how to use the tests and to record each day their dietary intake and stool consistency, the color of test control areas, the results, and the times of ibuprofen administration.
