Purpose: Quality of reduction is of paramount importance after acetabular fracture and is best assessed on computed tomography (CT). A recently proposed measurement technique for assessment of step and gap displacement is reproducible but has not been validated. The purpose of this study is to validate a well-established measurement technique against known displacements and to determine if it can be used with low dose CT.

As part of a project exploring different models for delivery of TB contact tracing, we conducted a qualitative analysis to explore the presence of TB stigma within communities across South Africa.
Methods: We conducted 43 in-depth interviews with 31 people with TB and 12 household contacts as well as five focus group discussions with 40 ward-based team members and 11 community stakeholders across three South African districts.
Selecting the optimal entry point for reconstruction nailing is critical to avoid iatrogenic malalignment and optimize mechanical stability. In-line nailing is familiar to surgeons and desirable for its on-axis position. However, there are several potential drawbacks.

Our objective was to evaluate the reliability of routine LFA results through comparative interlaboratory testing.
Methods: All CrAg-positive and a selected number of CrAg-negative samples from the CD4 laboratories were retested at paired microbiology laboratories using the same LFA.
Objectives: Plate-nail (PN) combinations have been described for fixation of supracondylar distal femur fractures. Small diameter retrograde intramedullary nails (rIMN) are commonly used. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nail diameter on construct stability.

We conducted an exploratory qualitative study to understand the role of outreach teams in delivering TB household contact tracing.
Methods: The study took place in three districts of South Africa between May 2016 and February 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence of subsidence in patients with AO/OTA 41 (tibial plateau) fractures which were repaired with a novel fenestrated screw system to used to deliver CaPO4 bone substitute material to fill the subchondral void and support the articular reduction.
Methods: Patients with unicondylar and bicondylar tibial plateau fractures were treated according to the usual technique of two surgeons. After fixation, the Zimmer Biomet N-Force Fixation System®, a fenestrated screw that allows for the injection of bone substitute was placed and used for injection of the proprietary calcium phosphate bone graft substitute into the subchondral void.
Background: Fluconazole is used in combination with amphotericin B for induction treatment of cryptococcal meningitis and as monotherapy for consolidation and maintenance treatment. More than 90% of isolates from first episodes of cryptococcal disease had a fluconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ≤4 μg/ml in a Gauteng population-based surveillance study of Cryptococcus neoformans in 2007-2008. We assessed whether fluconazole resistance had emerged in clinical cryptococcal isolates over a decade.

Methods: Twenty-four synthetic osteoporotic femurs were used to compare 4 constructs in an extra-articular, supracondylar fracture gap model (OTA/AO type 33-A3). Constructs included: (1) distal lateral femoral locking plate (DLFLP), (2) retrograde intramedullary nail (rIMN), (3) DLFLP + medial locking compression plate (DP construct), and (4) DLFLP + rIMN (PN construct).
Objective: To assess the variability in Nugent score and leukocyte count measured in vaginal secretions collected from 3 vaginal sites.
Methods: Fifty pregnant women at less than 20 weeks of gestation were consecutively recruited at the time of their first prenatal visit. Three vaginal smears were collected from each woman, 1 from the posterior fornix, 1 from the mid-lateral wall, and 1 from the introitus.

One hundred twenty-four cases of external endometriosis and 95 cases of adenomyosis were analyzed. The two are clinically different diseases which have one feature in common-a reactive fibrosis to aberrant endometrial tissue. They are coexistent in about the same frequency as would result from a noncausal relationship.
