Hiring in the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Board Certification Era: PHM Leader Perspectives.

Objectives: The designation of pediatric hospital medicine (PHM) as a board-certified (BC) subspecialty has led to uncertainty about the importance of PHM board certification in hiring pediatric hospitalists and ambiguity in counseling trainees interested in PHM careers about the decision to pursue fellowship. We sought to determine the importance of PHM board eligibility or certification in hiring practices.

Methods: We conducted an online, cross-sectional, survey-based study of individuals who self-identified as PHM division leadership utilizing the PHM Division Director Listserv and participant recruitment at a national meeting.

Promoting Organizational Change: A Urology Department-wide Wellness Program to Reduce Burnout.

Introduction: We developed a comprehensive wellness initiative to address burnout with specific interventions targeted at faculty, residents, nurses, administrators, coordinators, and other departmental personnel.

Methods: A department-wide wellness initiative was implemented in October 2020. General interventions included monthly holiday-themed lunches, weekly pizza lunches, employee recognition events, and initiation of a virtual networking board.

The nutritional impact of a feeding protocol for infants on high flow nasal cannula therapy.

Background: Clinicians may be reluctant to feed patients on high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy, despite studies suggesting it is beneficial and safe. We describe the implementation of a feeding protocol for patients with bronchiolitis on HFNC and determine its effect on nutrition goals.

Methods: Prospective bedside data on enteral volume, feed interruptions, and aspiration events were collected on patients with bronchiolitis who were <24 months of age, treated with HFNC, and fed per a developed protocol.

Acute Rheumatic Fever in a COVID-19-Positive Pediatric Patient.

Bacterial coinfection and COVID-19 have been reported in pediatric populations. We describe a case of Sydenham's chorea, which is exceedingly rare in developed countries, with concurrent COVID-19. Discussed here is the clinical course of an 8-year-old COVID-positive female with pure Sydenham's chorea and subclinical carditis from acute rheumatic fever.

Creating a Tool to Assess Interpretive Services Perceptions at a Hospital System Level.

The importance of using professional interpretive services (IS) when communicating with patients and families with limited English proficiency (LEP) is well described in the literature. There is no standardized tool to reliably evaluate IS from the point of view of bedside care providers. Collected local qualitative data and literature review informed an anonymous electronic survey that was distributed to physicians and nursing staff at a tertiary care children's hospital.

Feasibility of Patient Navigation and Impact on Adherence to Screening Colonoscopy in a Large Diverse Urban Population.

Introduction: Disparities observed in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality among blacks and Hispanics compared with whites may be in part due to lower screening rates. The New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has implemented a patient navigator (PN) program at NYC hospitals serving lower-income patients to promote high adherence by patients referred for screening colonoscopy. A prior study showed this PN program increased adherence at 3 public hospitals.

Developmental polychlorinated biphenyl exposure influences adult zebra finch reproductive behaviour.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are worldwide chemical pollutants that have been linked to disrupted reproduction and altered sexual behaviour in many organisms. However, the effect of developmental PCB-exposure on adult passerine reproductive behaviour remains unknown. A commercial PCB mixture (Aroclor 1242) or an estrogenic congener (PCB 52) were administered in sublethal amounts to nestling zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) in the laboratory to identify effects of developmental PCB-exposure on adult zebra finch reproductive parameters.

Brain structure differences between solitary and social wasp species are independent of body size allometry.

Evolutionary transitions in social behavior are often associated with changes in species' brain architecture. A recent comparative analysis showed that the structure of brains of wasps in the family Vespidae differed between solitary and social species: the mushroom bodies, a major integrative brain region, were larger relative to brain size in the solitary species. However, the earlier study did not account for body size effects, and species' relative mushroom body size increases with body size in social Vespidae.

Bronx Community Collaborative Opportunities for Research and Education: Implementation and Evaluation of a Community-Academic Partnership.

Background: Collaborations between community health and academic partners hold promise for improving community health through research.

Objectives: To develop, implement, and evaluate a partnership to build capacity for community-based research.

Methods: Development of the partnership was based on a participatory model that aimed to nurture strong infrastructure, clear communication, and trust between partners.

Off-Label Medication use in Children, More Common than We Think: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Content: Clinician prescribing of off-label medications is common due to a lack of pediatric-specific data regarding the dosing, efficacy and safety of medications regularly prescribed to children.

Objective: This systematic review summarizes the published incidence of off-label medication use in children from the past 10 years. We also performed a retrospective chart review to determine the incidence of off-label prescriptions for children seen in the OU Physicians clinics.

A Comparison of Wolbachia Infection Frequencies in Varroa With Prevalence of Deformed Wing Virus.

Wolbachia are widely distributed bacterial endosymbionts of arthropods and filarial nematodes. These bacteria can affect host fitness in a variety of ways, such as protecting hosts against viruses and other pathogens. Here, we investigate the possible role of Wolbachia in the prevalence of the deformed wing virus (DWV), a highly virulent pathogen of honey bees (Apis mellifera) that is transmitted by parasitic Varroa mites (Varroa destructor).

DMTS is an effective treatment in both inhalation and injection models for cyanide poisoning using unanesthetized mice.

Context: Cyanide (CN) is a metabolic poison, halting ATP synthesis by inhibiting complex IV of the electron transport chain. If exposed at high enough concentrations, humans and most animals can die within minutes. Because time is a crucial factor in survival of CN poisoning, a rapidly bioavailable, nontoxic, easy to administer CN medical countermeasure could improve morbidity/mortality in a mass CN exposure scenario.

MED12 regulates a transcriptional network of calcium-handling genes in the heart.

The Mediator complex regulates gene transcription by linking basal transcriptional machinery with DNA-bound transcription factors. The activity of the Mediator complex is mainly controlled by a kinase submodule that is composed of 4 proteins, including MED12. Although ubiquitously expressed, Mediator subunits can differentially regulate gene expression in a tissue-specific manner.

Improving student documentation using a feedback tool.

Background: Medical students are often given non-standardised midpoint feedback and final evaluation on their history and physical examination documentation, despite this written communication being one of the most important aspects of patient care. This study aims to assess the effect of using a standardised feedback tool on overall student documentation performance.

Methods: A standardised written evaluation form, called the history and physical examination write-up assessment (HAPA) form, was previously developed and published in The Clinical Teacher in 2011.

Transitioning From Medical Educator to Scholarship in Medical Education.

Clinician educators spend most of their time in clinical practice, educating trainees in all types of care settings. Many are involved in formal teaching, curriculum development and learner assessment while holding educational leadership roles as well. Finding time to engage in scholarly work that can be presented and published is an academic expectation, but also a test of efficiency.

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are projected to increase in usage across many industries. Two studies were conducted using Zea L. (corn) seeds exposed to SWNT spiked soil for 40 d.

Distributed cognition and social brains: reductions in mushroom body investment accompanied the origins of sociality in wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

The social brain hypothesis assumes the evolution of social behaviour changes animals' ecological environments, and predicts evolutionary shifts in social structure will be associated with changes in brain investment. Most social brain models to date assume social behaviour imposes additional cognitive challenges to animals, favouring the evolution of increased brain investment. Here, we present a modification of social brain models, which we term the distributed cognition hypothesis.
