Sebaceous lymphadenoma (SLA) is a histologic variant of lymphadenoma or sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland. The fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of SLA has not been well-described. In this report, we reported a case that involved an 81-year-old male with a long-standing left parotid mass and was diagnosed on FNA cytology.

Objectives: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) has become widely accepted as an effective modality for obtaining tissue for primary diagnosis and staging. We have been using EUS-FNA since July 2001 and herein we summarize our experience over a 5-year period.
Methods: A computer-based search for in-house EUS-FNA was performed in the pathology database from July 2001 to October 2006.

Epithelioid angiosarcomas are extremely rare tumors associated with poor prognosis and early metastases. Its epithelioid cytomorphology and limited vasoformation make it difficult to distinguish from more common malignancies, such as, carcinoma. This can be a potential diagnostic pitfall for the cytopathologist.

It is important to separate microcystic adenoma from adenocarcinoma and mucinous cystic neoplasms on aspiration cytology, because patients with microcystic adenoma can be treated conservatively unless they are symptomatic. Potential pitfalls with endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) sampling of these lesions is discussed.

Study Design: Histologically confirmed granulosa cell tumors, 6 adult type and 1 juvenile type, were identified. All patients had local recurrences or metastases.
Objective: To compare the diagnostic criteria for cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) noted on liver fine needle aspirates (FNAs) and their corresponding liver needle core biopsies (NCBs).
Study Design: We reviewed FNA slides from 15 cases of cirrhosis and 6 cases of HCC and their corresponding NCBs. We compared a variety of specific nonarchitectural criteria, including small cell dysplasia (SCD) and large cell dysplasia (LCD), for distinguishing cirrhosis from HCC.
Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is commonly used as an initial diagnostic tool in the evaluation of mass lesions. However, extraadrenal paragangliomas (EAPs) are not commonly seen on FNA and, when encountered, can pose a diagnostic challenge since they have a wide variety of morphologic patterns.
Cases: Two intraabdominal EAPs were misdiagnosed as an anaplastic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas with giant cell features and papillary adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.
Objective: To assess the significance of reporting hyperkeratosis on cervical/vaginal (CV) smears.
Study Design: Cases diagnosed with extensive hyperkeratosis (E-HK) and without prior or concurrent history of neoplasia, squamous intraepithelial lesion or atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) were retrieved from our files for the period January 1994-August 2001. E-HK is defined in our practice as patches of anucleated squames with irregular, angulated edges present in at least 5 low-power (10 x eyepiece and 10 x objective) fields on a conventional CV smear.
The cytologic similarity to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of 2 cases of granular renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with hyaline globules (HGs) prompted us to evaluate the frequency of HGs in RCC and HCC and the association between cell type, differentiation, and malignant potential of these 2 neoplasms and the presence of HGs. We studied fine-needle aspirates from 23 cases of RCC (primary, 7; metastatic, 16) and 23 cases of primary HCC and noted anatomic site, tumor cell type, and presence, quality, and quantity of HGs. Fuhrman nuclear grade was assigned to RCC and overall differentiation to HCC cases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe identification of an intact layer of myoepithelial cells (MECs) located between epithelial cells and the basal lamina is useful in differentiating benign breast lesions and carcinoma in situ from invasive breast carcinoma. In the present study we used three antibodies considered to be putative markers of MECs (S100 protein, muscle-specific actin [HHF-35], and smooth muscle actin [SMA]) in 100 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded histologic sections of breast in an attempt to compare their value in demonstrating MECs in benign breast tissue and breast carcinomas. We concluded that for identifying MECs in benign breast tissue, SMA appears to be the most reliable, followed closely by HHF-35, but S100 is very unreliable for this purpose.

One feature observed in tissue fragments previously thought to be indicative of mesothelial origin is the presence of intercellular windows, presumably due to long surface microvilli. In this study, however, we examined cytologic preparations of 143 effusion and body-cavity washing specimens and noted distinct intercellular window formation within tissue fragments of adenocarcinoma in 13% of the cases studied.
