Police reports of mock suspect interrogations: A test of accuracy and perception.

A 2-phased experiment assessed the accuracy and completeness of police reports on mock interrogations and their effects on people's perceptions. In Phase 1, 16 experienced officers investigated a mock crime scene, interrogated 2 innocent suspects-1 described by the experimenter as more suspicious than the other-and filed an incident report. All 32 sessions were covertly recorded; the recordings were later used to assess the reports.

Does video recording alter the behavior of police during interrogation? A mock crime-and-investigation study.

A field study conducted in a midsized city police department examined whether video recording alters the process of interrogation. Sixty-one investigators inspected a staged crime scene and interrogated a male mock suspect in sessions that were surreptitiously recorded. By random assignment, half the suspects had committed the mock crime; the other half were innocent.

The successful dissemination of empirically supported addiction therapies to community providers requires an appreciation of the characteristics of those practitioners who might be willing participants in this process of technology transfer. Clinicians (N = 66) from 11 community treatment programs associated with six research-clinic partnerships of the National Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network volunteered to be trained in Motivational Interviewing or Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET/MI) and were assessed prior to training. The sample of clinicians was heterogeneous in education and credentials, had a high level of counseling experience, reported using a wide range of counseling techniques and orientations, but had limited prior exposure to MET/MI or to the use of treatment manuals of empirically supported therapies.

Filter-culture technique using amoeba saline transport medium for the noninvasive diagnosis of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Acanthamoeba, a common free-living amoeba, is increasingly incriminated as a cause of keratitis and corneal ulceration. Between March 1986 and July 1988, specimens from seven patients submitted by ophthalmologists to the City of Milwaukee Health Department's Bureau of Laboratories were culture positive for Acanthamoeba. All patients were contact lens wearers.

The effectiveness of verbal versus activity groups in improving self-perceptions of interpersonal communication skills.

This study compares the efficacy of a verbal group with that of an activity group in an occupational therapy clinic during the treatment of interpersonal communication deficits at a psychiatric day treatment center. Outpatients were randomly assigned to the following groups: an experimental group, which received activity therapy (n = 7), an experimental group, which received verbal therapy (n = 6), and a control group, which was involved exclusively in the normal milieu therapy at the center (n = 6). The two experimental groups received one hour of treatment per week for eight weeks.

Vitamin A-deficient rabbits were used to evaluate the role of secondary bacterial infection in the development of keratomalacia and to describe the resultant clinical and morphologic alterations. The conjunctival sacs of vitamin A-deficient rabbits at different stages of corneal involvement were inoculated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa topically.
