Mature Cystic Teratomas (MCT) of the ovary or Dermoid Cysts are common benign tumours found in 10-20% of women. However, 0.2-2% of those cysts underwent malignant transformation.

Laparoscopic repair of type III/IV giant para-oesophageal herniae with biological prosthesis: a single centre experience.

Purpose: Repair of giant paraoesophageal herniae (GPEH) is technically challenging and requires significant experience in advanced foregut surgery. Controversy continues on suture versus mesh cruroplasty with the most recent systematic review and meta-analysis putting the onus on the operating surgeon. Study aim was to review whether the biological prosthesis (non-cross-linked bovine pericardium and porcine dermis) and the technique adopted for patients with GPEH had an influence on clinical and radiological recurrences.

Transitional behavior in hydrodynamically coupled oscillators.

In this article we consider the complete set of synchronized and phase-locked states available to pairs of hydrodynamically coupled colloidal rotors, consisting of spherical beads driven about circular paths in the same, and in opposing senses. Oscillators such as these have previously been used as coarse grained, minimal models of beating cilia. Two mechanisms are known to be important in establishing synchrony.

Optimal hydrodynamic synchronization of colloidal rotors.

Synchronization of driven oscillators is a key aspect of flow generation in artificial and biological filaments such as cilia. Previous theoretical and numerical studies have considered the "rotor" model of a cilium in which the filament is coarse grained into a colloidal sphere driven with a given force law along a predefined trajectory to represent the oscillating motion of the cilium. These studies pointed to the importance of two factors in the emergence of synchronization: the modulation of the driving force around the orbit and the deformability of the trajectory.

The general surgical care practitioner improves surgical outpatient streamlining and the delivery of elective surgical care.

The feasibility of implementing a surgical care practitioner (SCP) role for the delivery of secondary care within the general surgery department of a district general hospital was evaluated. Streamlining patients into an SCP-led 'one-stop' gallbladder clinic for symptomatic uncomplicated cholelithiasis led to a reduction in follow-up clinic workload for major elective laparoscopic work and more appropriate triaging of primary care referrals. Each of these improvements contributed to an efficient service model.

Detailed optical and EPR analyses of states induced in dark-adapted PS II membranes by cryogenic illumination permit characterization and quantification of all pigment derived donors and acceptors, as well as optically silent (in the visible, near infrared) species which are EPR active. Near complete turnover formation of Q(A)((-)) is seen in all centers, but with variable efficiency, depending on the donor species. In minimally detergent-exposed PS II membranes, negligible (<5%) oxidation of chlorophyll or carotenoid centers occurs for illumination temperatures 5-20 K.

Is the incidence of elbow osteoarthritis underestimated? Insights from paleopathology.

Objectives: Osteoarthritis is uncommon at the elbow in contemporary populations. We sought to determine whether this was also the case in medieval and premodern times.

Material And Methods: Standard criteria for osteoarthritis were applied to 496 complete elbows from a necropolis in Provence, France.
