In recent years, the registrations for a number of commercial insecticides utilized for piercing/sucking insects have been cancelled or restricted. To meet this growing need for new hemipteran controlling agrochemicals, we discovered a 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-thiazole compound, with limited insecticidal activity against cotton/melon aphid (Aphis gossypii). The 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-thiazole moiety offered us a basis to pursue the bicyclic 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-2H-indazole carboxamides.

Passive acoustic monitoring is an essential tool for studying beaked whale populations. This approach can monitor elusive and pelagic species, but the volume of data it generates has overwhelmed researchers' ability to quantify species occurrence for effective conservation and management efforts. Automation of data processing is crucial, and machine learning algorithms can rapidly identify species using their sounds.

The advent of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) technology offers important opportunities to observe deep diving cetaceans but statistical challenges remain particularly when trying to integrate VLT and PAM data.

Sperm whales are an ideal species to study using passive acoustic technology because they spend the majority of their time underwater and produce echolocation clicks almost continuously while foraging. Passive acoustic line transect data collected between June and August 2016 were used to estimate a depth-corrected acoustic abundance and study the dive behaviour of foraging sperm whales in the western North Atlantic Ocean. 2D localizations (n = 699) were truncated at a slant range of 6500 m and combined with the multipath arrivals of surface reflected echoes to calculate 3D localizations (n = 274).

Surgery for maxillary oral squamous cell carcinoma: the effect of surgical resection margins and elective neck dissection on oncological outcomes.

Maxillary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is uncommon. Surgical resection is challenging due to the anatomy, and the role of elective neck dissection (END) is not well-defined. A retrospective cohort study of patients with maxillary OSCC treated with primary surgery between 2007 and 2019 was conducted.

Management of illicit substances in hospital: An evaluation of policy and procedure implementation.

Previous research has identified illicit substance use on hospital property as an ongoing concern, particularly in inpatient mental health units. This research, combined with concerns raised by healthcare providers, patients, and patients' families, resulted in one hospital in a medium-sized city in Canada enacting two internal strategies for the management of illicit substances on hospital property. The unit-based Green-Yellow-Red procedure employs environmental scanning and regular risk assessment to report the incidence rate of illicit substances suspected and/or found in the unit, to inform staff of the extent of necessary interventions which should ensue.

Can radiological examination of mandibular bone invasion accurately predict the need for mandibular resection in oral squamous cell carcinoma?

Bone invasion by oral squamous cell carcinoma necessitates jaw resection, with preoperative imaging ideally able to guide the resection. A retrospective review of 109 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who underwent mandibular resection was performed. Eighty-three had preoperative computed tomography (CT) imaging and 72 underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

A description of echolocation clicks recorded in the presence of True's beaked whale ().

True's beaked whales () were encountered on two separate shipboard surveys on 24 July 2016 and 16 September 2017 in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Recordings were made using a hydrophone array towed 300 m behind the ship. In 2016, three different groups were sighted within 1500 m of the ship; clicks were recorded for 26 min.

To be commercially advantageous, PEC devices must become cheaper, more efficient, and much more durable. This work examines low-cost polycrystalline chalcopyrite films, which are successful as photovoltaic absorbers, for application as PEC absorbers.

Beaked whales demonstrate a marked acoustic response to the use of shipboard echosounders.

The use of commercial echosounders for scientific and industrial purposes is steadily increasing. In addition to traditional navigational and fisheries uses, commercial sonars are used extensively for oceanographic research, benthic habitat mapping, geophysical exploration, and ecosystem studies. Little is known about the effects of these acoustic sources on marine animals, though several studies have already demonstrated behavioural responses of cetaceans to shipboard echosounders.

Using multipath reflections to obtain dive depths of beaked whales from a towed hydrophone array.

Beaked whales are deep divers, emitting echolocation clicks while at depth. Little is known about the dive behavior of most species; however, passive acoustic data collected with towed hydrophone arrays can provide depth information using multipath reflections of clicks coupled with a two-dimensional localization of the individual. Data were collected during a shipboard survey in the western North Atlantic Ocean using a towed linear hydrophone array.

Aims/hypothesis: Cc2 mice lacking the gene encoding the carcinoembryonic-antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 2 (Cc2 [also known as Ceacam2]) exhibit hyperphagia that leads to obesity and insulin resistance. This starts at 2 months of age in female mice. Male mutants maintain normal body weight and insulin sensitivity until the last age previously examined (7-8 months), owing to increased sympathetic tone to white adipose tissue and energy expenditure.
