Evaluation of CD44 antigen in type 2 diabetic patients with periodontitis: An immunohistochemical study.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a known systemic risk factor for periodontitis. An increased expression of CD44 has been suggested in type 2 diabetics and periodontitis patients.

Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the expression of CD44 antigen in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and type 2 DM in a South Indian urban population.

Single nucleotide polymorphism at -1087 locus of interleukin-10 gene promoter is associated with severe chronic periodontitis in nonsmoking patients.

Objective: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of interleukin (IL)-10 gene, which codes for the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, have been associated with its level of production in chronic periodontitis. The prevalence of promoter SNP genotypes is known in other populations with chronic periodontitis, while its association in the Indian population is not known. Hence, the present study was designed to investigate the prevalence of IL-10 promoter polymorphism in a racially defined group of Indians with severe chronic periodontitis as the Indian population is known to be genetically diverse.

Assessment of Matrix Metalloproteinases-8 and -9 in Gingival Crevicular Fluid of Smokers and Non-smokers with Chronic Periodontitis Using ELISA.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-8 is increased in smokers with chronic periodontitis (CP). The levels of MMP-9 have not been assessed in the periodontal tissues of smokers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to estimate the concentrations of MMP-8 and -9 in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of smokers and non-smokers with CP.
