Emerging evidence has shown that magnesium (Mg) was associated with type 2 diabetes while few focused on abnormal glucose metabolism during pregnancy. The study is aimed at investigating the association between longitudinal changes in plasma Mg during pregnancy and subsequent risk of gestational diabetes (GDM) and exploring the possible influence of iron supplementation on the changes of plasma Mg levels. One thousand seven hundred fifty-six pregnant women from Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort (TMCHC) were involved.

Article Synopsis
  • Higher manganese (Mn) levels in early pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with the study showing that women in the highest plasma Mn quartiles had significantly elevated risks compared to those with the lowest levels.
  • *Among 2327 pregnant women analyzed, 9.7% were diagnosed with GDM, and the risk increased with higher Mn levels, suggesting a dose-response relationship.
  • *The study indicates that while Mn is essential for health, excessive levels during pregnancy could be an important risk factor for developing GDM, particularly affecting blood glucose levels.*
