Development of the Revised Entry-Level Essential Competencies in the Care of Older Adults: Linking Domains of Competence, Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education Standards, and the Geriatric 5Ms.

Purpose: Geriatric physical therapy (PT) has evolved since 2011, when the Essential Competencies (ECs) in the Care of Older Adults at the Completion of the Entry-level Physical Therapy Professional Program of Study were published. The purpose of the ECs was to ensure that all entry-level physical therapists were prepared to meet the unique needs of the growing older adult population. Changes in population demographics, medical and research advances, coupled with advancements in the profession of PT, necessitate a revision of the ECs.

Air-breathing vertebrates face many physiological challenges while breath-hold diving. In particular, they must endure intermittent periods of declining oxygen (O) stores, as well as the need to rapidly replenish depleted O at the surface prior to their next dive. While many species show adaptive increases in the O storage capacity of the blood or muscles, others increase the oxidative capacity of the muscles through changes in mitochondrial arrangement, abundance, or remodeling of key metabolic pathways.

Mitochondrial efficiency impacts nocturnal sheltering in juvenile salmon (), affecting the trade-off between foraging and predation risk.

At cold winter temperatures, juvenile salmonids typically spend much of their time sheltering from predators, which negatively impacts foraging for food. Previous work shows that inter-individual variation in mitochondrial efficiency explains variation in food intake, growth and metabolic rate. Here, we examine whether inter-individual variation in mitochondrial efficiency predicts sheltering as a proxy of foraging patterns for overwintering juvenile Atlantic salmon ().

Organising pneumonia due to inadequately cleared COVID-19 infection while on rituximab.

A male patient in his 70s with a history of tobacco use, organising pneumonia and rheumatoid arthritis that had been treated for several years with rituximab currently being treated with tocilizumab, presented with progressively worsening shortness of breath, increasing oxygen requirements and weakness. He had a history of COVID-19 infection 6 months prior to presentation. Initial COVID-19 PCR testing at presentation was negative.

An evolving roadmap: using mitochondrial physiology to help guide conservation efforts.

The crucial role of aerobic energy production in sustaining eukaryotic life positions mitochondrial processes as key determinants of an animal's ability to withstand unpredictable environments. The advent of new techniques facilitating the measurement of mitochondrial function offers an increasingly promising tool for conservation approaches. Herein, we synthesize the current knowledge on the links between mitochondrial bioenergetics, ecophysiology and local adaptation, expanding them to the wider conservation physiology field.

Objective: Analyze the implementation of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) in Chile with a view to optimizing the distribution of public resources.

Methods: A chronological narrative analysis of the main milestones was complemented by simulated application of DRGs through emulated competition and cluster analysis for evaluative purposes.

Results: In 2001, DRGs were introduced in Chile in an academic context.

Impact of Religious Affiliation on Clinical Outcomes in Liver Transplant Patients.

While the impact of spirituality as it relates to quality of life post-liver transplant (LT) has been studied, there are limited data showing how religious affiliation impacts objective measures such as survival. The aim of the study is to investigate whether LT recipients who identified as having a religious affiliation had better clinical outcomes when compared to LT recipients who did not. Religious affiliation is obtained as part of general demographic information for patients within our institution (options of "choose not to disclose" and "no religious affiliation" are available).

Progress towards understanding risk factor mechanisms in the development of autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a heterogenous set of syndromes characterised by social impairment and cognitive symptoms. Currently, there are limited treatment options available to help people with ASD manage their symptoms. Understanding the biological mechanisms that result in ASD diagnosis and symptomatology is an essential step in developing new interventional strategies.

The impact of neoadjuvant relugolix on multi-dimensional patient-reported fatigue.

Introduction: Androgen deprivation therapy has been shown to improve cancer control when combined with radiotherapy. Relugolix is an oral GnRH receptor antagonist that achieves rapid profound testosterone suppression, which may increase the perception and/or impact of fatigue. This study sought to evaluate neoadjuvant relugolix-induced fatigue in prostate cancer patients prior to the start of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

An interaction-based mixing model for predicting porosity and tensile strength of directly compressed ternary blends of pharmaceutical powders.

Predicting the mechanical properties of powder mixtures without extensive experimentation is important for model driven design in solid dosage form manufacture. Here, a new binary interaction-based model is proposed for predicting the compressibility and compactability of directly compressed pharmaceutical powder mixtures based on the mixture composition. The model is validated using blends of MCC, lactose and paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Institutional rearrangements in the north Luangwa ecosystem: Implications of a shift to community based natural resource management for equity in protected area governance.

Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) is presented as an equitable approach, particularly relative to strict types of Area-based conservation. In Zambia, traditional and formal, contemporary institutions were combined to leverage CBNRM for natural resource management. We investigate whether and how this shift in conservation approach and interaction between institutions works in practice, and to what extent it produces more equitable governance processes.

Reviewing the science on 50 years of conservation: Knowledge production biases and lessons for practice.

Drawing on 662 studies from 102 countries, we present a systematic review of published empirical studies about site-level biodiversity conservation initiated between 1970 and 2019. Within this sample, we find that knowledge production about the Global South is largely produced by researchers in the Global North, implying a neocolonial power dynamic. We also find evidence of bias in reported ecological outcomes linked to lack of independence in scientific studies, serving to uphold narratives about who should lead conservation.

Consistent changes in muscle phenotype and mitochondrial abundance underlie dive performance across multiple lineages of diving ducks.

Diving animals must sustain high muscle activity with finite oxygen (O2) to forage underwater. Studies have shown that some diving mammals exhibit changes in the metabolic phenotype of locomotory muscles compared with non-divers, but the pervasiveness of such changes across diving animals is unclear, particularly among diving birds. Here, we examined whether changes in muscle phenotype and mitochondrial abundance are associated with dive capacity across 17 species of ducks from three distinct evolutionary clades (tribes) in the subfamily Anatinae: the longest diving sea ducks, the mid-tier diving pochards and the non-diving dabblers.

The Effectiveness of Individualized Morphosyntactic Target Identification and Explicit Intervention Using the SHAPE CODING System for Children With Developmental Language Disorder and the Impact of Within-Session Dosage.

Purpose: We investigated the effectiveness of a highly individualized morphosyntactic intervention using the SHAPE CODING™ system delivered at different dosages.

Method: Eight children with developmental language disorder aged 8;0-10;10 (years;months) received 10 hr of explicit individualized intervention for morphosyntax delivered in 30-min individual sessions once per week for 20 weeks. Following at least four baseline probe tests, two grammatical targets per session received explicit instruction until they reached criterion (90%), when the next target was introduced.

Given the pathological role of Tau aggregation in Alzheimer's disease (AD), our laboratory previously developed the novel Tau aggregation inhibitor peptide, RI-AG03. As Tau aggregates accumulate intracellularly, it is essential that the peptide can traverse the cell membrane. Here we examine the cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking of RI-AG03, in both a free and liposome-conjugated form.

Characterising illness stages and recovery trajectories of eating disorders in young people via remote measurement technology (STORY): a multi-centre prospective cohort study protocol.

Background: Eating disorders (EDs) are serious, often chronic, conditions associated with pronounced morbidity, mortality, and dysfunction increasingly affecting young people worldwide. Illness progression, stages and recovery trajectories of EDs are still poorly characterised. The STORY study dynamically and longitudinally assesses young people with different EDs (restricting; bingeing/bulimic presentations) and illness durations (earlier; later stages) compared to healthy controls.

Mechanistic modeling of twin screw wet granulation for pharmaceutical formulations: Calibration, sensitivity analysis, and model-driven workflow.

Wet granulation, a particle size enlargement process, can significantly enhance the critical quality attributes of powders and improve the ability to form tablets in pharmaceutical manufacturing. In this study, a mechanistic-based population balance model is applied to twin screw wet granulation. This model incorporated a recently developed breakage kernel specifically designed for twin screw granulation, along with nucleation, layering, and consolidation.
