Brain Injury: What Influences the Beliefs U.S. Service Members Have About Reporting and Seeking Care?

Introduction: Despite the recent Department of Defense emphasis on traumatic brain injury (TBI) education and improvements in treatment, social, and attitudinal beliefs instilled in the military community hinder seeking medical assistance at the time of injury. This survey research presents injury reporting and care seeking behavioral patterns of service members (SMs) stationed in the Landstuhl catchment area in the context of TBI. This descriptive study investigated whether sociocultural factors influence health decision-making among SMs stationed abroad and how these compare to the SMs stationed in Fort Bliss and Fort Hood.

The interplay between long-term potentiation and long-term depression (LTD) is thought to be involved in learning and memory formation. One form of LTD expressed in the hippocampus is initiated by the activation of the group 1 metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs). Importantly, mGluRs have been shown to be critical for acquisition of new memories and for reversal learning, processes that are thought to be crucial for cognitive flexibility.

Synthetic versus natural cat odorant effects on rodent behavior and medial amygdala plasticity.

Fear and anxiety behaviors are underpinned by neuronal changes within the amygdala. Here, the effects of exposure to natural and synthetic cat odor on behavior and amygdala plasticity were determined. Exposure to natural odor elicited typical and persistent anxiety-related behaviors, such as avoidance, freezing, and flat-back approach; however, synthetic odorant evoked no significant alteration in behavior.

Multidisciplinary teamwork approach in labor and delivery and electronic fetal monitoring education: a medical-legal perspective.

In recent years, reports of the increasing number of preventable medical errors have stimulated the healthcare delivery system to develop and implement programs to improve patient safety. Many of these medical errors become the impetus for malpractice lawsuits brought against healthcare givers. In light of the large number of cases that involve electronic fetal monitoring issues, this article reviews many of the claims involved in those malpractice cases and some of the pitfalls encountered in defense of those claims.

Induction of synchronous oscillatory activity in the rat lateral amygdala in vitro is dependent on gap junction activity.

Synchronized and rhythmic activity within the amygdala is thought to play a pivotal role in the generation of fear- and anxiety-related behaviour. The aim here was to determine the validity of the in vitro amygdala slice preparation to investigate the generation of rhythmic activity similar to that observed in vivo. Extracellular population activity recorded from the lateral nucleus of the amygdala in vitro showed significant enhancement of activity within the theta-band frequency (3-9 Hz) in the presence of kainic acid (100 nm; n=18).

The ebb and flow of marital lust: a relational approach.

This diary study examined daily fluctuation in marital lust over a 56-day period. The purposes of the study were to describe typical patterns of lust over time and to examine intrapersonal and interpersonal associations between relationship affect, relationship states, and marital lust. We also tested various daily moderational predictions.

Differential expression of mouse orexin receptor type-2 (OX2R) variants in the mouse brain.

We have identified two novel mouse orexin type-2 receptor (OX2R) splice variants: OX2alphaR and OX2betaR. Here, we have mapped in detail the differential gene expression of OX2alphaR and OX2betaR in the mouse brain. Using RT-PCR and in situ hybridization, we show that OX2alphaR is expressed in various areas of the mouse brain and has low expression in caudal part of cerebellum.

Amygdala oscillations and the consolidation of emotional memories.

The amygdala receives multi-modal sensory inputs and projects to virtually all levels of the central nervous system. Via these widespread projections, the amygdala facilitates consolidation of emotionally arousing memories. How the amygdala promotes synaptic plasticity elsewhere in the brain remains unknown, however.
