Characterization of the in vivo wall shear stress environment of human fetus umbilical arteries and veins.

The endothelial cells of the umbilical vessels are frequently used in mechanobiology experiments. They are known to respond to wall shear stress (WSS) of blood flow, which influences vascular growth and remodeling. The in vivo environment of umbilical vascular WSS, however, is not well characterized.

Primary human chorionic gonadotropin secreting germinoma of the corpus callosum.

Background: Primary intracranial germinomas are a rare subset of intracranial tumors derived from mis-incorporated germ cells within the folding neural plate during embryogenesis. Though known to arise from midline structures in the central nervous system (CNS), occurrence within the corpus callosum is exceedingly rare.

Case Description: We present a rare case of secreting primary intracranial germinoma with extensive intraventricular metastasis presenting as a multi-cystic butterfly lesion in the genu of the corpus callosum in a young boy.

Intrahepatic vein fetal blood sampling: current role in prenatal diagnosis.

Objective: To identify the site of fetal blood sampling (FBS) with lesser complications; and also analyses the reasons for targetting the intrahepatic vein (IHV) for FBS.

Methods: Fetal blood sampling (FBS) performed on 382 women over a period of 7 years at the National University Hospital, Singapore was analysed. FBS was performed from 13 weeks of gestational age onwards.

Serum phospholipid fractions measured by two dimensional thin layer chromatography in normal pregnancy.

Serum phospholipid fractions were quantitated by two dimensional thin layer chromatography in 85 apparently normal pregnant women at different gestational period. Fifteen healthy non-pregnant women matched for age served as controls. Normal chromatogram showed eight spots of serum phospholipid viz.

INTRAMUSCULAR 15(S)15 METHYL PGF IN THE TREATMENT OF MISSED ABORTION.

Intramuscular 15(S)15 methyl PGF (Prostin 15M, Upjohn) was used for induction of labour in cases of missed abortion and intra-uterine fetal death. The patients received premedication to control the gastrointestinal side effects. Prostin 15M was given at a dose of 250 µg every three hours and escalated whenever required.

Diazepam therapy in eclampsia.

The single drug therapy of diazepam can be introduced to effectively control convulsions in eclampsia. This treatment will have particular application in rural obstetrics where eclampsia is seen in severe form. The dose schedule of diazepam, as described in this study, shows the therapy to have a stabilizing effect on hypertension and pulse rate.
