From a drug repositioning to a structure-based drug design approach to tackle acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Cancer cells utilize the main de novo pathway and the alternative salvage pathway for deoxyribonucleotide biosynthesis to achieve adequate nucleotide pools. Deoxycytidine kinase is the rate-limiting enzyme of the salvage pathway and it has recently emerged as a target for anti-proliferative therapies for cancers where it is essential. Practical and concise synthesis of nucleoside analogs.

Nucleoside analogs are valuable commodities in the development of antisense oligonucleotides or as stand-alone antiviral and anticancer therapies. Syntheses of nucleoside analogs are typically challenged by a reliance on chiral pool starting materials and inefficient synthetic routes that are not readily amenable to diversification. The novel methodology described in this protocol addresses several longstanding challenges in nucleoside analog synthesis by enabling flexible and selective access to nucleoside analogs possessing variable nucleobase substitution, D- or L-configuration, selective protection of C3'/C5' alcohols and C2' or C4' derivatizations.

Intraoperative Hypotension and Acute Kidney Injury in Non-cardiac Surgery at a Large Tertiary Care Medical Center.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious postoperative complication that increases patients' risk for long- and shortterm morbidity and mortality. Risk for developing AKI increases following intraoperative hypotension (IOH). This project aimed to describe the rate of and establish IOH as an independent risk factor for AKI among adults undergoing non-cardiac surgery at a large tertiary care medical center.

Following the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery in 2015, the Global Surgery Fellowships have risen in popularity, advertised as formalized opportunities for surgical trainees who have an interest in international surgical care. There is currently no up-to-date review of all fellowships available and an urgently needed overview of these opportunities is presented, including critical appraisal of their accessibility, funding, and outcomes. Scalable Biomimetic Syntheses of Paeciloketal B, 1--Paeciloketal B, and Bysspectin A.

The first total synthesis of the benzannulated 5,5-spiroketal natural products paeciloketal B and 1--paeciloketal B has been achieved in 10 linear steps employing a biomimetic spiroketalization. This approach also furnished the related natural product bysspectin A from the same putative biosynthetic precursor as the paeciloketals. Alternatively, bysspectin A could be accessed in only six steps using an improved route.

There is growing recognition that doctors need to deliver person-centered care. More evidence is needed on how to best equip students in an already busy curriculum. Providing medical students with the opportunity to work as Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) can help them develop the desired skills.

Erosion and Corrosion Resistance Performance of Laser Metal Deposited High-Entropy Alloy Coatings at Hellisheidi Geothermal Site.

Geothermal process equipment and accessories are usually manufactured from low-alloy steels which offer affordability but increase the susceptibility of the materials to corrosion. Applying erosion-corrosion-resistant coatings to these components could represent an economical solution to the problem. In this work, testing of two newly developed laser metal deposited high-entropy alloy (LMD-HEA) coatings-CoCrFeNiMo and AlCoCrFeNi, applied to carbon and stainless steels-was carried out at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant.

Can Topical Vancomycin Prevent Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty? A Systematic Review.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after hip and knee arthroplasty is a leading cause of revision surgery, inferior function, complications, and death. The administration of topical, intrawound vancomycin (vancomycin powder) has appeared promising in some studies, but others have found it ineffective in reducing infection risk; for that reason, a high-quality systematic review of the best-available evidence is needed.

Questions/purposes: In this systematic review, we asked: (1) Does topical vancomycin (vancomycin powder) reduce PJI risk in hip and knee arthroplasty? (2) Does topical vancomycin lead to an increased risk of complications after hip and knee arthroplasty?

Methods: A search of Embase, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases as of June 2020 was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Digital Educational Support Groups Administered through WhatsApp Messenger Improve Health-Related Knowledge and Health Behaviors of New Adolescent Mothers in the Dominican Republic: A Multi-Method Study.

Synthesis and SAR Analysis of Lipovelutibols B and D and Their Lipid Analogues.

The first syntheses of the cytotoxic peptides lipovelutibols B and D are described. While lipovelutibol D was prepared using solid-phase peptide synthesis followed by an - acyl migration to install the -terminal amino alcohol, a different strategy was required to access lipovelutibol B and a series of -terminal lipid analogues of the natural products. A cytotoxicity structure-activity relationship study revealed that the lipovelutibol D framework, whereby serine is substituted for alanine in the fifth position, provided the most potent analogues.
