Acute cardiotoxicity of nucleoside analogs FddA and FddI in rats.

The acute cardiotoxic potential of single dosages of FddA (2'-fluoro-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine) and FddI (2'-fluoro-2',3'-dideoxyinosine) was investigated in 6- to 9-week-old rats. Both nucleoside analogs were administered orally at 1000 and 2000 mg/kg and intravenously at 500 or 1000 mg/kg. For comparative purposes, additional groups of rats received 2'-deoxyadenosine or the 2-fluororibose moiety common to both the FddA and FddI molecules.

Hippocampal lesions do not impair negative patterning: a challenge to configural association theory.

According to configural association (CAS) theory (Sutherland & Rudy, 1989), an intact hippocampus is required for rats to solve learning problems that are based on "configural" processes. This theory identifies the negative patterning discrimination as a critical example of this type of problem. Rudy and Sutherland (1989) reported disruption of negative patterning following hippocampal formation damage produced by intracranial infusion of a mixture of kainic acid + colchicine (KA + COL).

A role for hippocampus in the utilization of hunger signals.

The hippocampus is generally regarded as an important anatomical substrate for learning and memory (e.g., Eichenbaum, Otto, & Cohen, Behavioral and Neural Biology, 57, 2-36, 1992; Squire, Psychological Review, 99, 195-231, 1992).

Ontogeny of a circadian rhythm in body temperature in newborn lambs reared independently of maternal time cues.

To investigate the ontogeny of a circadian rhythm in body temperature, we performed 24-h temperature measurements at six postnatal ages in ten newborn lambs reared independently of their ewes. At 18 to 48 h of age, a significant time-of-day variation in body temperature was found, the variation achieving a peak between 5.00 pm and 6.

Cl- replacement alters the ventilatory response to central chemoreceptor stimulation.

To determine whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Cl- has a role in determining the stimulus to the central respiratory chemoreceptors under conditions of constant CSF pH, CO2, and HCO3- concentrations, the ventral medullary surface of the anesthetized rat was perfused with mock CSF of various ion composition and pH. Four mock CSF perfusates were used: two normal pH control perfusions and two acidic solutions. One acidic perfusate was formulated in the traditional manner by substituting Cl- for HCO3-.

Preoperative drinking does not affect gastric contents.

We have compared the effect of allowing free clear fluids until the time of oral premedication with conventional preoperative fasting. In a prospective, randomized trial, the residual volume and pH of gastric contents after induction of anaesthesia were measured in 100 elective surgical patients allocated randomly to a group in whom the intake of free clear fluids up to the time of premedication was measured (mean 388 ml in 6 h before surgery) or a control group who were fasted for 6 h. Preoperative drinking did not affect either mean (SD) residual gastric volume (22 (21) ml in the study group vs 19 (16) ml in the control group) or pH (study group 2.

A cohort study of coagulase negative staphylococcal mastitis in selected dairy herds in Prince Edward Island.

The epidemiology and importance of coagulase negative staphylococcal (CNS) mastitis in Prince Edward Island had not been documented. To investigate this, a cohort of 84 cows at seven farms were quarter sampled eight times over a lactation, commencing with samples taken prior to drying off in the previous lactation. Thirteen species of CNS were isolated.

Development of tolerance to endogenous opiates activated by 24-h food deprivation.

Four experiments assessed the effects of exposure to 24-h food deprivation on the tail-flick latency of rats exposed to a temperature stimulus. Confirming previous studies, Experiment 1 showed that food deprivation gave rise to analgesia, as indicated by increased tail-flick latencies, that was antagonized by naloxone. Experiment 2 found that analgesia was greatly reduced after five exposures to periods of 24-h food deprivation (alternating with 24-h free access to food), indicating the development of tolerance.

Potency of food deprivation intensity cues as discriminative stimuli.

Rats were trained to use stimuli arising from 0 and 24 hr without food as discriminative signals for shock. In Experiment 1, one group was shocked under 0-hr food deprivation and not shocked under 24-hr food deprivation. Another group received the reverse contingency.

Acute inhalation toxicity of cetylpyridinium chloride.

Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a quaternary ammonium salt and cationic surfactant. It has been used as a biocide in personal hygiene products and a charge control additive in some reprographic toners. CPC is orally toxic to rats, mice and rabbits and can cause severe eye irritation.

The rhinologic evaluation of Alzheimer's disease.

Olfactory dysfunction is currently not listed among the NINCDS-ADRDA clinical criteria for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. There is a large amount of psychophysical and neuropathologic evidence to suggest that patients with Alzheimer's type dementia have olfactory system abnormalities. The rhinologic status of this group has not been characterized.

Emergency laparotomy in patients with AIDS.

The presentation, operative management and final diagnosis were reviewed in 28 patients with AIDS (27 men and one woman) who underwent emergency laparotomy. On clinical and radiological examination, six patients showed features of toxic megacolon, five patients had small bowel obstruction, six patients had localized peritonitis and three had perforated viscus with generalized peritonitis. The most common disease processes were acute colitis in seven patients (associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in six), intra-abdominal lymphoma in five patients, acute appendicitis in five patients (associated with CMV infection in two), and atypical mycobacterial (MAI) infection in four patients.

Psychological Profile and Outcome in Patients Undergoing Gastroplasty for Morbid Obesity.

Eighteen out of 22 consecutive patients undergoing vertical banded gastroplasty were reviewed with regard to preoperative psychological assessment and postoperative outcome. Each patient was initially evaluated by a consultant liaison psychiatrist with regard to previous or ongoing psychological disturbance, and suitability for bariatric surgery. Patients could be grouped into three broad categories: Group A (seven patients) those with no psychiatric abnormality; Group B (six patients) those with minor psychiatric disorders such as sociopathic teenage behavior, outpatient treatment for depression; and Group C (five patients) those with a history of major psychiatric disturbance such as depressive psychosis and drug dependency.

Selective hypnotic amnesia: is it a successful attempt to forget or an unsuccessful attempt to remember?

Subjects in 2 experiments (ns = 72 and 50) learned a 16-item, 4-category word list and were then administered hypnotic suggestions to be amnesic for all the words in 1 of the categories. Even when selective amnesia was completely successful, subjects in both experiments revealed a high level of recall for words not targeted for amnesia; moreover, these words were recalled in a highly organized, category-by-category fashion. Preservation of facial contour during parotidectomy.

Parotid surgery often leaves a facial contour deformity. Free abdominal dermal-fat grafts were used to preserve the facial contour of nine patients undergoing parotid surgery. This procedure is simple to perform and provides an improved cosmetic result without significantly increasing operative time or lengthening hospitalization.

Scar revision.

Different scar revision techniques are compared on similar scars, all on the same patient. Comparison of the final results is unique and interesting and provides insight into choosing the "optimal" technique for these procedures. Historical perspective is provided.

Envenomation by the colubrid snake Atractaspis bibronii: a case report.

A reptile caretaker was bitten and envenomated by Atractaspis bibronii while handling a box of "non-venomous" colubrid feeder snakes. The patient was bitten on a finger by a single fang. Pain and swelling were noted within 10 min and dissipated over the ensuing 3 days.

On the hippocampus and learned conditional responding: effects of aspiration versus ibotenate lesions.

To study the possible involvement of the hippocampus in learned conditional responding, rats with aspiration lesions of the hippocampus and others that had the hippocampus removed with ibotenic acid were trained on concurrent Pavlovian conditional and nonconditional discriminations. In agreement with the results reported by Ross et al. (1984), animals that had the hippocampus removed with aspiration were unable to learn the conditional discrimination, but learned the simple nonconditional discrimination without difficulty.

Metallic clips as a time/cost saving adjunct to head and neck surgery.

Metal surgical clips are commonly used in head and neck surgery today. In this study of 10 patients, 69 vessels in the neck were ligated with tantalum clips and 68 vessels were ligated with silk ties. The times for cutting and ligating each vessel were recorded and the results show a 31-second timesavings by clipping the vessel as opposed to tying.

Maintenance of the spinal nucleus of bulbocavernosus and perineal muscles in female Albino Swiss rats treated with perinatal dihydrotestosterone.

Female Albino Swiss rats were exposed to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone benzoate (DHTB) for the last 4 days of gestation, or for 4 days after birth, or both. Post-natal DHTB exposure (as well as pre-plus post-natal exposure) resulted in a 2-3-fold increase in the number of motor neurones forming the spinal nucleus of bulbocavernosus (SNB); numbers were intermediate between those found in normal females (approximately 40) and males (approximately 200). These DHTB-treated groups also possessed perineal muscles which were approximately 25% of the weight of those in normal males.

Discontinuation of diazepam and sensitivity to a shock signal: fear conditioning prior to drug treatment.

The present experiment examined the disruptive capacity of a shock CS when Pavlovian training was completed prior to repeated daily treatment with diazepam (DZ). Two groups of rats were given 20 Pavlovian fear conditioning trials (two per day) to establish a light CS as a shock signal. Both groups were then trained for 15 daily sessions to bar press for food reinforcement.
