Investigations of host-symbiont interactions can benefit enormously from a complete and reliable holobiont gene expression profiling. The most efficient way to acquire holobiont transcriptomes is to perform RNA-Seq on both host and symbionts simultaneously. However, optimal methods for capturing both host and symbiont mRNAs are still under development, particularly when the host is a eukaryote and the symbionts are bacteria or archaea.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research indicated that combining cediranib with olaparib improved progression-free survival (PFS) in women with recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer compared to olaparib alone.
  • The BAROCCO trial involved 123 patients and compared the effects of paclitaxel, olaparib, and cediranib on PFS, revealing that the continuous schedule of cediranib-olaparib had a median PFS of 5.6 months, while paclitaxel had 3.1 months.
  • The results showed that the combination wasn’t superior to chemotherapy, but it may provide a viable non-chemotherapy option for patients with advanced and heavily pretreated ovarian cancer.

Background: Trabectedin, in addition to its antiproliferative effect, can modify the tumour microenvironment and this could be synergistic with bevacizumab. The efficacy and safety of trabectedin and bevacizumab ± carboplatin have never been investigated.

Methods: In this phase 2 study, women progressing between 6 and 12 months since their last platinum-based therapy were randomised to Arm BT: bevacizumab, trabectedin every 21 days, or Arm BT+C: bevacizumab, trabectedin and carboplatin every 28 days, from cycles 1 to 6, then trabectedin and bevacizumab as in Arm BT.

Introduction: The CoQun study is a multicenter, controlled trial aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Coqun, an ophthalmic solution of Coenzyme q10 (CoQ10) and Vitamin E (VitE), in patients affected by primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Pre-clinical studies and small non-controlled clinical trials have previously shown a potential role of CoQ10 and VitE in glaucoma neuroprotection, both in vitro and in vivo.

Methods: Randomized, parallel arm, multicenter, double-blind study.

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a treatment strategy with latanoprost and dorzolamide in primary pediatric glaucoma patients partially responsive to surgery.

Patients And Methods: Children with primary pediatric glaucoma with postsurgical intraocular pressure (IOP) between 22 and 26 mm Hg were eligible. At baseline, patients were administered latanoprost once daily.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between visual field (VF) loss, vision-related quality of life (QoL) and glaucoma-related symptoms in a large cohort of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. POAG patients with or without VF defects or "glaucoma suspect" patients were considered eligible. QoL was assessed using the validated versions of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) and glaucoma-related symptoms were assessed using the Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS).

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a treatment strategy with latanoprost and dorzolamide in primary pediatric glaucoma patients partially responsive to surgery.

Patients And Methods: Children with primary pediatric glaucoma having postsurgical untreated intraocular pressure (IOP) between 22 and 26 mm Hg were eligible. At baseline, patients were administered latanoprost once daily.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explores how the heat shock protein (hsp70) in the coral Pocillopora verrucosa is regulated by stress, examining samples taken from different depths and locations in Bangka Island, Indonesia.
  • - Findings showed that coral cover decreases with depth, and warmer seawater temperatures at certain sites led to higher hsp70 expression in corals collected from shallower depths (3 m) compared to deeper ones (12 m).
  • - After laboratory tests simulating temperature changes, corals from 12 m showed greater sensitivity and over-expression of stress-related genes when subjected to thermal stress, while those from 3 m demonstrated resilience, suggesting local habitat conditions significantly affect the coral's stress response.

Introduction: To investigate the efficacy of a treatment strategy with latanoprost and dorzolamide in primary pediatric glaucoma patients partially responsive to surgery.

Methods: Single arm, prospective, interventional multicenter study. Primary pediatric glaucoma patients younger than 13 years after a single surgical procedure with IOP between 22 and 26 mmHg were considered eligible.

Purpose: Adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival of patients with gastric cancer. Intergroup Trial of Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Adenocarcinoma of the Stomach (ITACA-S) was a phase III study comparing sequential FOLFIRI followed by docetaxel/cisplatin versus 5-fluorouracil monotherapy. The intensive regimen was not superior in terms of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).

Purpose: To determine the outcome of needling with adjunctive 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in patients with a failing Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implant, and to identify predictors of long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) control.

Methods: A prospective observational study was performed on consecutive patients with medically uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with AGV encapsulation or fibrosis and inadequate IOP control. Bleb needling with 5-FU injection (0.

Purpose: As a progressive condition, glaucoma may impair health-related quality of life (HRQoL), due to vision loss and other factors. This study evaluated HRQoL in a cohort of patients treated for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and assessed its association with clinical features.

Methods: This was an Italian, multicentre, cross-sectional, observational study with the subgroup of newly diagnosed patients with POAG prospectively followed up for one year.

Purpose: To determine whether baseline Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) measurements of the optic disc are associated with the development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in individuals with ocular hypertension in the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS).

Design: Retrospective analysis of a prospective, randomized, multicenter, double-masked, controlled clinical trial.

Methods: There were 489 participants in the HRT Ancillary Study to the EGPS.

Purpose: To estimate the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effect of prostaglandin analogs (PGAs) administered in combination with β-blockers.

Methods: We searched the Medline and Embase databases for randomized trials comparing topical therapies with PGAs and timolol administered as monotherapy (Mt), or in fixed (FC) or unfixed combinations (UC) to patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The efficacy endpoint was the mean difference (MeD) in the reduction in IOP from baseline; the tolerability endpoint was the incidence of hyperemia.

Objective: To test the validity and generalizability of the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) prediction model for the development of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in a large independent sample of untreated ocular hypertensive individuals and to develop a quantitative calculator to estimate the 5-year risk that an individual with ocular hypertension will develop POAG.

Design: A prediction model was developed from the observation group of the OHTS and then tested on the placebo group of the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS) using a z statistic to compare hazard ratios, a c statistic for discrimination, and a calibration chi2 for systematic overestimation/underestimation of predicted risk. The 2 study samples were pooled to increase precision and generalizability of a 5-year predictive model for developing POAG.
