Bradycardia and hypotension following reperfusion with streptokinase (Bezold-Jarisch reflex): a sign of coronary thrombolysis and myocardial salvage.

Acute myocardial infarction, particularly of the inferior wall, is frequently associated with bradycardia and hypotension. This study reports the occurrence of transient bradycardia hypotension (TBH) (Bezold-Jarisch reflex) following thrombolytic therapy with intravenous streptokinase. Of the 52 patients, 42 had successful reperfusion, and 12 of the latter developed reflex TBH.

Noninvasive recordings of cochlear evoked potentials in Meniere's disease.

Noninvasive meatal electrocochleography simultaneously recorded with brain stem auditory evoked potentials were performed on 24 adult patients with unilateral Meniere's disease. Data from the affected ear were compared with those of the nonaffected ear and with those of ten healthy normally hearing adults. The most striking finding was the significant deviation from the norm of the nonaffected ears' action potential duration.

Cholesteatoma: an epidemiologic study among members of kibbutzim in northern Israel.

In this study 3,056 members (10 years of age and older) of the kibbutzim in the northern part of Israel were examined in order to determine the prevalence of chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. In addition to demographic factors, the influence of altitude was investigated, but the differences were not found to be significant. The prevalence of chronic otitis media was found to be 0.

Feasibility of pre-hospital fibrinolytic therapy in acute myocardial infarction.

Intravenous streptokinase (STK) was given in the field by a physician-staffed mobile intensive care ambulance to 13 patients. Patients waited 33 +/- 17 minutes to call the ambulance, arrival time was 5 +/- 3 minutes, and a further work-up time of 32 +/- 8 minutes elapsed. The average time from the onset of pain until administration of STK was 66.

A comparison of auditory brain stem evoked potentials in hyperlipidemics and normolipemic subjects.

Twenty-five hyperlipidemic, neurologically and audiologically asymptomatic patients were compared to 20 normolipemic control subjects regarding different interpeak latency differences (IPLD) of auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEP). ABEP were recorded in response to click stimuli presented at a rate of 10/sec and 55/sec. The net effect of increasing stimulus rate (ISR) on IPLD of ABEP was significantly greater in the hyperlipidemic patients for IPLD (V-I) and IPLD (III-I).

In vitro cytotoxicity and demyelination induced by Theiler viruses in cultures of spinal cord slices.

The cytopathic effects caused by Theiler viruses to myelinated organotypic spinal cord cultures was studied by light and electron microscopy. Heavily myelinated cultures, 2-3 weeks in vitro were infected with WW and GD VII viruses. Mock infection served as control.

A simple prognostic index for hospitalized geriatric patients. A prospective study of 70 patients.

A simple prognostic index for hospitalized geriatric patients is reported herein. Seven parameters including: mobility, sphincter control, mental competence, feeding ability, presence of pressure sores, medical condition and family state were recorded in 70 patients. The sum of the scores of all parameters constituted the prognostic index.

Theiler's virus replication in isolated Schwann cell cultures.

Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis viruses causing both fatal encephalitis (GDVII virus) and chronic demyelinating disease (WW virus) are capable of replicating in isolated Schwann cell cultures. Light microscopy combined with immunohistochemical staining of viral antigens revealed that large numbers of Schwann cells infected with the two viruses show cytopathic effect (rounding) and contain viral antigens. Electron microscopy of virus-infected Schwann cells shows that the morphological alterations that the cells undergo following infection by the two virus isolates are different.

Immunity and suppression in radiation- and radiation leukemia virus (RadLV)-induced leukemogenesis.

Adult C57BL/6 (B6) mice exposed to fractionated irradiation or inoculated with a highly leukemogenic RadLV (A-RadLV) develop high incidence of lymphatic leukemias after a latency of 3-5 months. Inoculation of a low leukemogenic RadLV variant (D-RadLV) does not result in lymphoma development unless the animals receive a single, sublethal dose of irradiation. Whereas virus-induced primary lymphomas produce virus, express gp70 and are all immunogenic, those induced by X-rays are devoid of virus expression and are not immunogenic.

Auditory brain-stem evoked potentials in patients undergoing dialysis.

Auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (ABEPs) and pure-tone audiograms were obtained for 38 patients with renal failure, undergoing dialysis, before and after a dialysis session, and for 40 healthy normal subjects. Blood chemistry was also evaluated for each patient before and after dialysis. ABEP abnormality (using 10/sec click rate) was observed for 24% of the patients, rising to 44% when 55/sec measures were included.

High- and low-leukemogenic variants of the radiation leukemia virus (RadLV): immunogenic, suppressive and genetic properties in relation to leukemogenic activity.

C57BL/6 (B6) mice inoculated with the highly leukemogenic variant of the radiation leukemia virus (A-RadLV) develop suppressor cells capable of abrogating potential anti-tumor immunity in vitro and in vivo. Inoculation of B6 animals with the low-leukemogenic D-RadLV variant does not result in suppressor cell generation but induces antitumor reactive lymphocytes. A-RadLV and D-RadLV are not leukemogenic in BALB/c or (B6 X BALB/c)F1(F1) mice, and reactive but not suppressor lymphocytes could be demonstrated in F1 animals inoculated with either virus.

The hyperacute phase of right ventricular infarction.

In summary, the hyperacute phase of RV infarction presents three possible patterns on the surface ECG (Fig. 3): the typical repolarization picture of hyperacute myocardial infarction, with slope elevation of the ST segment and tall T waves; rounded elevation of the ST segment, where the typical changes are "damped" by negative or posterolaterally directed, LV repolarizing forces; and ST elevation concave upward in the right chest leads, where anteriorly directed, underlying left ventricular ST segment and T wave vectors enhance the hyperacute picture.

Tinnitus as a prognostic factor in sudden deafness.

Recovery from idiopathic sudden hearing loss depends on many factors, some as yet unknown. This study found tinnitus to be a favorable prognostic sign, based on an analysis of symptoms and recovery rates in a series of 60 patients. Hearing improved in 80 per cent of the patients studied.

Early postoperative assessment of coronary artery bypass surgery using nuclear left ventriculography and atrial pacing.

Nuclear ventriculography (MUGA) was performed in 22 patients at rest and during the stress of right atrial pacing 6 to 8 days after coronary artery bypass surgery. In 7 patients the MUGA-atrial pacing test was positive for ischemia with chest pain, electrocardiographic ST depression and/or a decrease in global left ventricular ejection fraction of greater than 10%. All 7 patients subsequently developed angina pectoris with a positive treadmill test (performed at a median time of 14 months after operation).

Suppressor and reactive lymphocytes in radiation leukemia virus (RadLV)-induced leukemogenesis.

Suppressor cells capable of enhancing tumor growth in vivo and of abrogating a potential anti-tumor immunity in vitro are generated in C57BL/6 mice inoculated with the high-leukemogenic A-RadLV. Mice inoculated with low-leukemogenic D-RadLV do not develop suppressor cells but contain anti-tumor reactive lymphocytes that can inhibit in vivo tumor growth. Cyclophosphamide (CyF) treatment of mice inoculated with A-RadLV hampered suppressor cell function and rendered the animals' lymphocytes responsive to A-RadLV induced tumor cells in vitro.

Auditory brain stem evoked potentials: clinical promise of increasing stimulus rate.

Auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEPs) were recorded from 10 adults and 10 children who where neurologically and audiometrically normal. ABEPs were recorded in response to 75 dB HL clicks presented at rates of 10/sec and 50/sec. Normative values were calculated for amplitude and latency, as well as for inter-peak amplitude ratio and a variety of inter-peak latency differences and interaural differences at the two stimulus presentation rates.
