Context: End-of-life care (EOLC) communication is beneficial but underutilized, particularly in conditions with a variable course such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF). Physicians' emotional distress intolerance has been identified as a barrier to EOLC communication. We compare the photoinduced reorientation of the easy axis on rubbed polyimide surfaces for the nematic E7 doped with three isomers of methyl red; ortho, meta, and para. Using optical techniques, the angle and the pitch of the director at the polymer surface were measured before, during, and after photoexcitation of the dye. Optical absorbances were also measured before and after photoexcitation.

We compare photoinduced reorientation of homeotropic and planar aligned nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) doped with trace amounts of azo-dye disperse orange 3 (DO3) by studying the optical nonlinearities of the sample. Theoretical and experimental analyses confirm the proposal that the trans and cis isomers can be treated as independent contributors to the enhancement factor. Dynamic measurements indicate three contributions to photoinduced optical nonlinearities, two of which are isotropic and a third corresponding director reorientation.
