Purpose: Accurate segmentation of the hippocampus for hippocampal avoidance whole-brain radiotherapy currently requires high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in addition to neuroanatomic expertise for manual segmentation. Removing the need for MR images to identify the hippocampus would reduce planning complexity, the need for a treatment planning MR imaging session, potential uncertainties associated with MRI-computed tomography (CT) image registration, and cost. Three-dimensional (3D) deep convolutional network models have the potential to automate hippocampal segmentation.

Unlabelled: Computed tomography (CT) derived ventilation algorithms estimate the apparent voxel volume changes within an inhale/exhale CT image pair. We previously reported that apparent lung mass varies across the phases of 4D computed tomography (4DCT) images. We hypothesize that these variations correspond to the physiologic changes in pulmonary perfusion induced during normal tidal breathing, and should therefore be present in every breathing patient. We investigated the effects of cross sectional geometry on surface plasmon polariton propagation in gold nanowires (NWs) using bleach-imaged plasmon propagation and electromagnetic simulations. Chemically synthesized NWs have pentagonally twinned crystal structures, but recent advances in synthesis have made it possible to amplify this pentagonal shape to yield NWs with a five-pointed-star cross section and sharp end tips. We found experimentally that NWs with a five-pointed-star cross section, referred to as SNWs, had a shorter propagation length for surface plasmon polaritons at 785 nm, but a higher effective incoupling efficiency compared to smooth NWs with a pentagonal cross section, labeled as PNWs.

For integrating and multiplexing of subwavelength plasmonic waveguides with other optical and electric components, complex architectures such as junctions with sharp turns are necessary. However, in addition to intrinsic losses, bending losses severely limit plasmon propagation. In the current work, we demonstrate that propagation of surface plasmon polaritons around 90° turns in silver nanoparticle chains occurs without bending losses.

The potential of microarray gene expression (MAGE) data is only partially explored due to the limited number of samples in individual studies. This limitation can be surmounted by merging or integrating data sets originating from independent MAGE experiments, which are designed to study the same biological problem. However, this process is hindered by batch effects that are study-dependent and result in random data distortion; therefore numerical transformations are needed to render the integration of different data sets accurate and meaningful.

In this work, we describe an electro-optic material capable of orthogonally switching the polarization of the localized surface plasmon resonance scattering of single gold nanorods, independent of their orientation. Liquid crystal samples are prepared in a sandwich configuration with electrodes arranged so that an applied voltage induces alignment-switching of the liquid crystal molecules covering individual gold nanorods. Due to the birefringence of the nematic liquid crystal, the reorientation in the nematic director alignment causes a change in the output polarization of the scattered light.

Bleach-imaged plasmon propagation, BlIPP, is a far-field microscopy technique developed to characterize the propagation length of surface plasmon polaritons in metallic waveguides. To correctly extract the propagation length from the measured photobleach intensity, it is necessary to understand the mechanism by which dye photobleaching occurs. Here, we present a novel approach to visualize propagating surface plasmon polaritons through plasmon-exciton interactions between single gold nanowires and a thin film of a fluorescent polymer. A plasmon polariton was launched by exciting one end of a single gold nanowire with a 532 nm laser. The local near-field of the propagating plasmon modes caused bleaching of the polymer emission.

In this communication we demonstrate the dependence of the solute order parameter on the solute molecular weight for polymer solutes dissolved in liquid crystalline solvents. Using ensemble absorption polarization spectroscopy together with single molecule fluorescence polarization measurements, we have determined the order parameter of the conjugated polymer MEH-PPV (poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene]) in the liquid crystal 5CB (4-cyano-4-n-pentylbiphenyl) as a function of polymer chain length. Ensemble absorption polarization measurements agree well with results obtained by single molecule fluorescence polarization spectroscopy, indicating a large-scale ordering of the MEH-PPV solute in 5CB.

Constitutive activation of the RAS/RAF/MAPK pathway has been found in different tumor types including papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs). To get more insight into genes primarily regulated in the human tumor cells, an in vitro model was developed in which primary cultures of human thyrocytes were treated for different times with epidermal growth factor and serum (EGF/serum), which stimulate the MAPK cascade. HLA-DR is under investigation as a target for monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy of malignancies. Here we describe a humanized IgG4 form of the anti-HLA-DR mAb L243, hL243gamma4P (IMMU-114), generated to provide an agent with selectivity toward neoplastic cells that can kill without complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) or antibody-dependent cellular-cytotoxicity (ADCC), so as to reduce reliance on intact immunologic systems in the patient and effector mechanism-related toxicity. In vitro studies show that replacing the Fc region of hL243gamma1, a humanized IgG1 anti-HLA-DR mAb, with the IgG4 isotype abrogates the effector cell functions of the antibody (ADCC and CDC) while retaining its antigen-binding properties, antiproliferative capacity (in vitro and in vivo), and the ability to induce apoptosis concurrent with activation of the AKT survival pathway.
