Recent studies in mice reveal widespread cortical signals during task performance; however, the various task-related and task-independent processes underlying this activity are incompletely understood. Here, we recorded wide-field neural activity, as revealed by GCaMP6s, from dorsal cortex while simultaneously monitoring orofacial movements, walking, and arousal (pupil diameter) of head-fixed mice performing a Go/NoGo visual detection task and examined the ability of task performance and spontaneous or task-related movements to predict cortical activity. A linear model was able to explain a significant fraction (33-55% of variance) of widefield dorsal cortical activity, with the largest factors being movements (facial, walk, eye), response choice (hit, miss, false alarm), and arousal and indicate that a significant fraction of trial-to-trial variability arises from both spontaneous and task-related changes in state (e.

Article Synopsis
  • Inhibitory interneurons in the entorhinal cortex (EC) play a key role in encoding spatial location, but their intrinsic properties are not well understood.
  • Researchers conducted experiments on various interneurons and found significant physiological diversity among and within different cell types, like stellate and pyramidal cells.
  • By applying hierarchical cluster analysis, they identified specific functional classifications of neurons that closely align with biomarker categories, successfully reducing the complexity of their intrinsic properties to five main characteristics that accurately predict cellular identity.

Unlabelled: During the generation of higher-frequency (e.g., gamma) oscillations, cortical neurons can exhibit pairwise tight (<10 ms) spike synchrony.

Cortical and thalamocortical activity is highly state dependent, varying between patterns that are conducive to accurate sensory-motor processing, to states in which the brain is largely off-line and generating internal rhythms irrespective of the outside world. The generation of rhythmic activity occurs through the interaction of stereotyped patterns of connectivity together with intrinsic membrane and synaptic properties. One common theme in the generation of rhythms is the interaction of a positive feedback loop (e.

The distribution of mitochondria is sensitive to physiological stresses and changes in metabolic demands. Consequently, it is important to carefully define the conditions facilitating live imaging of mitochondrial transport in dissected animal preparations. In this study, we examined Schneider's and the haemolymph-like solutions HL3 and HL6 for their suitability to image mitochondrial transport in motor axons of dissected Drosophila melanogaster larvae.
