Background: N-of-1 trials compare two or more treatment options for a single participant. These trials have been used to study options for chronic conditions such as arthritis and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition, they have been suggested as a means to study interventions in rare populations that may not be tractable to include in standard clinical trials, such as treatment options for HIV-positive patients in need of organ transplant.

To address this, we used mRNA-seq to isolate genes differentially expressed between ovary-active and ovary-inactive workers in the intermediately eusocial bumblebee Bombus terrestris. By comparisons with data from the advanced eusocial honeybee Apis mellifera, which shows reduced worker reproductivity, we characterized gene expression differences associated with change in worker reproductivity as a function of eusocial complexity.

The aim of this study was to assess cirrhosis care in an Australian primary care setting by evaluating rates of cirrhosis diagnosis, appropriate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance and specialist communication.
Methods: Electronic medical records in consenting general practices were reviewed using the "Liver Toolkit" to identify patients with an existing cirrhosis diagnosis.

The optimization of floating bifacial solar panels (FBS PV) in tropical freshwater systems is explored by employing response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD). Previous studies have yet to explore the long-term durability, environmental impact, economic viability, and performance of FBS PV systems under various climatic conditions. This study addresses this gap by focusing on panel height, water depth, and tilt angle to improve performance.

We previously showed that TSP1/2 are upregulated in the partial neocortical isolation model ("undercut" or "UC" below) of posttraumatic epileptogenesis and may contribute to abnormal axonal sprouting, aberrant synaptogenesis and epileptiform discharges in the UC cortex. These results led to the hypothesis that posttraumatic epileptogeneis would be reduced in TSP1/2 knockout (TSP1/2 KO) mice.

Little is known about the risk factors for cognitive impairment and its association with myelin content in young adults living with perinatally acquired HIV (YApHIV), which is assessed in our cross-sectional study.
Design: A prospective, observational cohort study.
Background: Identifying patients with undiagnosed advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) is a public health challenge. Patients with advanced fibrosis or compensated cirrhosis have much better outcomes than those with decompensated disease and may be eligible for interventions to prevent disease progression.
Methods: A cloud-based software solution ("the Liver Toolkit") was developed to access primary care practice software to identify patients at risk of ACLD.
Background: The first spatially resolved transcriptomics platforms, GeoMx (Nanostring) and Visium (10x Genomics) were launched in 2019 and were recognized as the method of the year by in 2020. The subsequent refinement and expansion of these and other technologies to increase -plex, work with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, and analyze protein in addition to gene expression have only added to their significance and impact on the biomedical sciences. In this perspective, we focus on two platforms for spatial transcriptomics, GeoMx and Visium, and how these platforms have been used to provide novel insight into kidney disease.

Aims: To characterise clinical, laboratory and histopathological phenotypes and outcomes of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) due to anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), and bodybuilding supplements (BBS) in Australia.
Methods: Retrospective case series.
Solar Photovoltaic systems are used for electrical power generation, and they provide an alternative source to non-renewable energy sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear energy. Photovoltaic arrays used in PV systems may be subjected to partial shading conditions, thereby affecting power generation because of higher power mismatch losses. Due to an uneven distribution of irradiation condition, some of the bypass diodes turned on and affect the power generation in a photovoltaic array.

We tested the Home Dialysis Care Experience survey, a newly developed 26-item experience measure, among patients from 30 dialysis facilities in the United States.
Methods: Using mail and telephone survey modalities, we approached 1372 patients treated with peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis for participation.
Key Points: In the largest survey of US nephrology providers on conservative kidney management (CKM), most reported limited experience with CKM and varied approaches and local resources to provide CKM. There is need to enhance provider training and surveillance of CKM practices and to develop models of CKM that optimize care delivery and outcomes for these patients.
Background: Clinical practice guidelines advocate for conservative kidney management (CKM), a planned, holistic, patient-centered approach to caring for patients who forgo initiation of RRT.

For power transformer applications, this study explores an alternative insulating liquid. With this aim, edible natural esters such as refined Olea europaea (olive oil), rice bran oil, soya bean oil, sunflower oil, and corn oil are investigated as suitable replacements for the mineral oil (MO) used in the transformer. In addition, olive oil and other natural esters are incorporated into the blend for further analysis to obtain a better insulating medium.

The anatomical, physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the bark fiber (MTBF) were investigated. The mean diameter and density values were determined to be 32.

Guidelines recommend elastography, but the utility of transient elastography (TE) and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between TE and 2D SWE in FALD.

Methods: We investigated associations of biomarkers of tubular injury and inflammation with kidney structural features in 244 adults with type 1 diabetes from the Renin-Angiotensin System Study, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial testing effects of enalapril or losartan on changes in glomerular, tubulointerstitial, and vascular parameters from baseline to 5-year kidney biopsies. Biosamples at biopsy were assessed for kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), soluble TNF receptor 1 (sTNFR1), arginine-to-citrulline ratio in plasma, and uromodulin and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in urine.
Genetic variation accounts for much of the risk for developing a substance use disorder, but the underlying genetic factors and their genetic effector mechanisms are mostly unknown. Inbred mouse strains exhibit substantial and heritable differences in the extent of voluntary cocaine self-administration. Computational genetic analysis of cocaine self-administration data obtained from twenty-one inbred strains identified Nav1, a member of the neuron navigator family that regulates dendrite formation and axonal guidance, as a candidate gene.

The spectrum of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) encompasses a diverse range of clinical entities, from asymptomatic isolated steatosis to decompensated cirrhosis, and in some cases, acute or chronic liver failure. Consequently, it is important for healthcare practitioners to maintain awareness and systematically screen for ALD.

However, in principle, the fecundity-longevity relationship can become positive in populations in which individuals have unequal resources. Positive fecundity-longevity relationships also occur in queens of eusocial insects such as ants and bees.

First described in human cancers in 2004, its prevalence and prognostic significance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has only been appreciated in the past decade with a rapidly increasing body of literature. A robust biomarker of aggressive disease, the VETC pattern is easy to recognise but relies on histologic examination of tumour tissue for its diagnosis.
