We present a patient with sickle cell trait who suffered avascular necrosis of the maxilla as a complication of maxillary osteotomy. Understanding the blood supply of the maxilla and how possible patient related, anaesthetic and operative factors affect it, is important in understanding how the vascularity of the maxilla can become compromised in a surgical procedure. The perioperative parameters were analysed to identify any prognostic elements.

Patients And Methods: Records of patients who had undergone combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment between 1998 and 2003 (n = 69) were obtained from 3 consultant orthodontists at 3 major hospitals in Leeds, UK. The duration of postoperative orthodontic treatment was calculated as the date of the operation to the date of fixed appliance removal.
Laser scanning can be used to visualize the face in three dimensions. These scans can then be processed to enable assessment of facial changes. The aim of this single-centre, prospective, longitudinal, cohort study was to investigate whether four different visualization methods correctly represented facial changes occurring as a result of orthognathic surgery.
