Loss-of-function analysis of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor Hand1 indicates critical roles in development. In an effort to generate a Hand1 cDNA knock-in reporter mouse, we generated two hypomorphic alleles, which extend embryonic survival to between embryonic day (E) 10.5 and E12.

This study examined the relations between psychopathy scores and violent behavior in 113 incarcerated adolescents. We compared the results of four different instruments designed to assess psychopathy features among juveniles-the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV), two versions of the Antisocial Processes Screening Device (APSD), and a Psychopathy Content scale on the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI). We found that PCLY:YV scores were significantly correlated with violent offense history, unadjudicated violence, and institutional violence, as well as measures of the severity and instrumentality of prior violence.

The high-yield, general, one-pot synthesis of substituted isoindolequinones, a group of important radiosensitizers which sensitize hypoxic cells to the lethal effect of radiation in cancer radiotherapy, is described. Primary amines react with 2,3-bis[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]-5,6-dimethylhydroquinone (2) in methanol at room temperature under an inert atmosphere to give substituted isoindolequinones 2-alkyl-1,3,5,6-tetramethylisoindole-4,7-quinone (4) in almost quantitative yields. Moderate yields of 4 are also obtained using 2,3-diethynyl-5,6-dimethylhydroquinone (3) and amines as reactant and solvent under the similar conditions.

Reaction of VO(acac)(2) with 2-mercaptophenol (mpH(2)) in the presence of triethylamine gives the mononuclear tris complex (Et(3)NH)(2)[V(mp)(3)] (1), in which the vanadyl oxygen has been displaced. An analogous reaction using 2-mercapto-4-methylphenol (mmpH(2)) afforded (Et(3)NH)(PNP)[V(mmp)(3)] (2), which was structurally characterized. 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna2(1 )with unit cell parameters (at -163 degrees C) a = 23.
