Background: To study the diagnostic accuracy of physical examination (PE), ultrasonography (US), contrastenhanced computed tomography (CT) and in preoperative detection of macroscopic nodal metastasis in primary/recurrent papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients to determine if the routine addition of CT would be beneficial in accurate preoperative lymph-node surgery planning.

Methods: In a tertiary center prospective study, 162 PTC patients underwent preoperative lymph-node evaluation by PE, US, and CT. Sensitivity, specificity, positive/negative predictive value (PPV/NPV) of each nodal detection technique were calculated in central/lateral cervical compartments.

Solitary fibrous tumors are relatively rare mesenchymal neoplasms that were originally described as pleural- or peritoneal-based lesions. Although they were considered a form of mesothelioma, subsequent investigation failed to reveal mesothelial differentiation. Characterization of their histologic and immunohistochemical features, as well as identification in a multitude of nonmesothelial-based locations has further served to distinguish these lesions from the more diffuse and aggressive mesothelioma.

As we age, a number of factors distort the contour of the cervicomental angle. Submental adipose deposits, anterior laxity of the platysma muscle, and relaxation of cervical skin contribute to this undesirable result. Comprehensive rhytidectomy will frequently involve enhancement of the cervicomental angle as an adjunctive procedure.

We report a case of perineural invasion of the facial nerve by a cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in a 59-year-old man who presented with a slowly progressive facial paralysis. We performed a distal facial nerve dissection and a simple mastoidectomy with facial recess exposure for resection to negative margins. We also performed a simultaneous facial reconstruction and reanimation procedure with excellent results.
