Communication of hydrologic data to the public can be improved by connecting data to the places they represent. In our example of data communication, we coupled hydrologic data with simultaneously collected video as both a scientific and public engagement tool. This note presents a method for collecting spatially and temporally dense datasets of water-quality and geophysical data on small streams and lakes, and for displaying the data in a user-friendly format using commercially available software.

Protection of fens-wetlands dependent on groundwater discharge-requires characterization of groundwater sources and stresses. Because instrumentation and numerical modeling of fens is labor intensive, easy-to-apply methods that model fen distribution and their vulnerability to development are desirable. Here we demonstrate that fen areas can be simulated using existing steady-state MODFLOW models when the unsaturated zone flow (UZF) package is included.

Vascular insults to the spinal cord are substantially less common than their corresponding events in the brain; it has been estimated, for example, that spinal cord infarcts make up ≤ 1% of ischemic events in the central nervous system. Although the public health burden of spinal cord injury remains severe, the majority of this burden stems from traumatic rather than vascular events. Still, vascular injuries in the spine are common enough and their consequences devastating enough that a familiarity with the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the more common etiologies is essential to any practitioner of the clinical neurosciences.

A pH-responsive threadlike micellar system was developed by mixing alkyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride (EO12) and trans-o-coumaric acid (tOCA). The rheological response of this system to pH is unusual in that it has viscoelasticity at both high and low pH levels, while it shows water-like behaviors at medium pH. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) images confirmed the presence of TLMs at pH 3.

The authors present a case of traumatic, complete, high cervical spine injury in a patient with gradual worsening deformity and neck pain while in rigid cervical collar immobilization, ultimately resulting in coronal-plane spondyloptosis. Due to the extent of lateral displacement of the spinal elements, preoperative evaluation included catheter angiography, which revealed complete right vertebral artery (VA) occlusion. A prophylactic arterial bypass graft from the right occipital artery to the extradural right VA was fashioned to augment posterior circulation blood supply prior to reduction and circumferential instrumented fusion.

A photoresponsive micellar solution is developed as a promising working fluid for district heating/cooling systems (DHCs). It can be reversibly switched between a drag reduction (DR) mode and an efficient heat transfer (EHT) mode by light irradiation. The DR mode is advantageous during fluid transport, and the EHT mode is favored when the fluid passes through heat exchangers.

Birch reductive alkylation of methyl m-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate derivatives, using lithium in ammonia-tetrahydrofuran in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol, can be achieved without significant loss of benzylic oxygen substituents. Similar treatment of o- and p-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate derivatives results largely in loss of benzylic oxygen substituents. The results are rationalized by computations describing electron density patterns in the putative radical anion intermediate involved in these reactions.

Subsurface heterogeneity in hydraulic properties and processes is a fundamental challenge in hydrogeology. We have developed an improved method of borehole dilution testing for hydrostratigraphic characterization, in which distributed temperature sensing (DTS) is used to monitor advective heat movement. DTS offers many advantages over conventional technologies including response times in the order of seconds rather than minutes, the ability to profile temperature synoptically in a well without disturbing the fluid column, sensitivity to a wider range of flow rates than conventional spinner and heat pulse flow meters, and the ease of interpretation.

Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is typically associated with metastasis to the abdomen, pelvis, and lung. We found three case reports of ESS metastasis to the bone (two to the thoracic spine, and one to the parietal bone). Our objective is to review the literature on ESS spinal and intracranial metastases and, report the first case of ESS metastatic to the lumbar paraspinal region and sphenoid bone.

Drag reduction effectiveness of two dilute quaternary ammonium surfactant aqueous solutions with different pairs of mixed aromatic counterions was investigated along with their micellar nanostructures revealed by cryo-TEM imaging, zeta potential, particle size, and (1)H NMR measurements. Certain combinations of aromatic counterion mixtures showed significant synergistic effects. They dramatically improved drag reduction effectiveness relative to either single aromatic counterion.

Background: The uncertainty surrounding dietary requirements for selenium (Se) is partly due to limitations in biomarkers of Se status that are related to health outcomes. In this study we determined the effect of different doses and forms of Se on gene expression of selenoprotein S (SEPS1), selenoprotein W (SEPW1) and selenoprotein R (SEPR), and responses to an immune function challenge, influenza vaccine, were measured in order to identify functional markers of Se status.

Methods And Findings: A 12 week human dietary intervention study was undertaken in 119 volunteers who received placebo, 50, 100 or 200 µg/day Se-enriched yeast (Se-yeast) or meals containing unenriched or Se-enriched onions (50 µg/day).

Free radical cyclization of 4 and 7 gave the expected cyclization-reduction products (5 and 8) along with considerable amounts of products derived from a cyclization-atom transfer-secondary cyclization process (6 and 9). Two approaches to avoiding these unexpected products were explored. Use of a cyclopropylcarbinyl fragmentation avoided the secondary cyclization reaction (25 or 43 --> 26 or 44), whereas use of an allene as a radical acceptor avoided the atom-transfer reaction altogether (49 --> 52).

Eight bromoalkynes were prepared from substituted benzoic acids and treated with n-Bu3SnH to provide trans-fused perhydroindans or cis- and trans-fused perhydronaphthalenes. Atom-transfer reactions that accompany the free radical reactions resulted in several tandem radical cyclizations with formation of up to three carbon-carbon bonds in a single reaction. The relationship between these reactions and an approach to the quassinoid family of natural products is also described.

Aquitards protect underlying aquifers from contaminants and limit recharge to those aquifers. Understanding the mechanisms and quantity of ground water flow across aquitards to underlying aquifers is essential for ground water planning and assessment. We present results of laboratory testing for shale hydraulic conductivities, a methodology for determining the vertical hydraulic conductivity (K(v)) of aquitards at regional scales and demonstrate the importance of discrete flow pathways across aquitards.

Single (13)C(6)-labeled doses of pteroylmonoglutamic acid (PteGlu: 634 nmol; n = 14), (6S-)5-formyltetrahydrofolic acid (431-569 nmol; n = 16), or [(15)N(1-7)]-intrinsically labeled spinach (mainly 5-methyltetrahydrofolate) (588 nmol; n = 14) were fed to fasting adult volunteers. Plasma-labeled 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid responses were monitored for 8 h. There was a slower rate of increase in plasma-labeled 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid and longer time to peak (171 +/- 9 min; mean +/- SEM) following an oral dose of [(13)C(6)]PteGlu than either [(13)C(6)]5-formyltetrahydrofolic acid (54 +/- 10 min) or [(15)N(1-7)]spinach folate (60 +/- 13 min) suggesting saturated metabolic capacity for the biotransformation of PteGlu.
