The generation of coherent and indistinguishable single photons is a critical step for photonic quantum technologies in information processing and metrology. A promising system is the resonant optical excitation of solid-state emitters embedded in wavelength-scale three-dimensional cavities. However, the challenge here is to reject the unwanted excitation to a level below the quantum signal.

Reports of pharmaceuticals in STPs and aquatic systems in the northern hemisphere have surged over the last decade. However, the Australian evidence base is relatively limited, and information on the role of seasonal dilution in attenuation of micropollutants is also scarce. We investigated the removal of 11 PPCPs during sewage treatment in Australia's largest inland STP, and concentrations in the effluent-receiving environment under 2 dilution scenarios.

Estrogenicity of sewage effluents, and related ecotoxicological effects in effluent-receiving environments, have been widely reported over the last 2 decades. However, relatively little attention has been given to other endocrine pathways that may be similarly disrupted by a growing list of contaminants of concern. Furthermore, the Australian evidence base is limited compared with those of Europe and North America.

We report on the design and experimental demonstration of a system based on an L3 cavity coupled to a photonic crystal waveguide for in-plane single-photon emission. A theoretical and experimental investigation for all the cavity modes within the photonic bandgap is presented for stand-alone L3 cavity structures. We provide a detailed discussion supported by finite-difference time-domain calculations of the evanescent coupling of an L3 cavity to a photonic crystal waveguide for on-chip single-photon transmission.

Objective. As recent participants in an integrated prostate cancer (PCa) care center, we sought to evaluate whether financial investment in an intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) center resulted in an increased utilization of radiation therapy in our patients with newly diagnosed PCa. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the preliminary safety and efficacy of three doses of budiodarone in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Background: Budiodarone is a chemical analogue of amiodarone and shares its mixed ion channel electrophysiological properties. It has a shorter half-life than amiodarone.

We report photoluminescence measurements on a single layer of site-controlled InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on pre-patterned GaAs(100) substrates with a 15 nm re-growth buffer separating the dots from the re-growth interface. A process for cleaning the re-growth interface allows us to measure single dot emission linewidths of 80 µeV under non-resonant optical excitation, similar to that observed for self-assembled QDs. The dots reveal excitonic transitions confirmed by power dependence and fine structure splitting measurements.

Comparative pharmacokinetics of vitamin K epoxide reductase antagonists tecarfarin and warfarin were assessed before and after coadministration for 21 days of the CYP450 inhibitor fluconazole in a randomized, open-label, single-center drug interaction study. Twenty healthy adult participants were randomized 1:1 to receive approximately equipotent single oral doses of tecarfarin (50 mg) or warfarin (17.5 mg).

Australian sleepy lizards (Tiliqua rugosa) exhibit marked locomotor activity rhythms in the field and laboratory. Light-dark (LD) and temperature cycles (TCs) are considered important for the entrainment of circadian locomotor activity rhythms and for mediating seasonal adjustments in aspects of these rhythms, such as phase, amplitude, and activity pattern. The relative importance of 24 h LD and TCs in entraining the circadian locomotor activity rhythm in T.

Background: Tecarfarin (ATI-5923) is a novel oral vitamin K antagonist. Unlike warfarin, it is metabolized by esterases, escaping metabolism by the cytochrome P450 system and thereby avoiding cytochrome P450-mediated drug-drug or drug-food interactions as well as genetic variations found in the cytochrome P450 system. Both tecarfarin and warfarin can be monitored with the international normalized ratio.

Few studies in non-mammalian vertebrates have examined how various effectors of the circadian system interact. To determine if the daily locomotor and behavioural thermoregulatory rhythms of Tiliqua rugosa are both controlled by the circadian system in different seasons, lizards were tested in laboratory thermal gradients in four seasons and in constant darkness. Circadian rhythmicity for both rhythms was present in each season, being most pronounced in spring and summer and least evident in autumn.

This study examined whether the daily rhythms of locomotor activity and behavioural thermoregulation that have previously been observed in Australian sleepy lizards (Tiliqua rugosa) under field conditions are true circadian rhythms that persist in constant darkness (DD) and whether these rhythms show similar characteristics. Lizards held on laboratory thermal gradients in the Australian spring under the prevailing 12-hour light : dark (LD) cycle for 14 days displayed robust daily rhythms of behavioural thermoregulation and locomotor activity. In the 13-day period of DD that followed LD, most lizards exhibited free-running circadian rhythms of locomotor activity and behavioural thermoregulation.

The synthesis and structural characterization of [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(eta(2)-TRIPHOS)Cl][PF(6)] is described. The complex is a highly active, homogeneous arene hydrogenation catalyst that is selective toward the hydrogenation of aromatic rings in preference to alkenes, as demonstrated by the hydrogenation of allylbenzene to allylcyclohexane. The catalyst operates in both dichloromethane and ionic liquids and undergoes no decomposition in the latter solvent.

Spontaneous extravasation of urine is becoming more frequently recognised. When associated with rupture of the renal pelvis it is more likely to present to a general surgeon as an "acute abdomen" than to a urological surgeon, and unless suspected early will not be diagnosed until after laparotomy has been performed. The case presented demonstrates many of the problems in the diagnosis of this condition, and the management is discussed.
