Article Synopsis
  • Cementless fixation is becoming more important in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and this article reviews its functional outcomes and how long the implants last.
  • A thorough literature search identified 15 studies published between 2010 and 2022, with 11 comparing cementless to cemented TKA and 4 focusing solely on cementless implants.
  • The findings suggest that cementless TKA has functional outcomes and survivorship that are at least as good as cemented implants, and advancements in technology may lead to increased adoption of cementless methods in the future.

Introduction: A number of studies have demonstrated a significant reduction of surgical time for robotically assisted surgery (RAS) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) after the learning curve between 6 and 43 cases. It is unknown if the logistics of RAS produce a longer total theatre time since published literature only reflects the surgical time. It is also unknown how RAS surgical and total theatre times compare with computer assisted surgery (CAS) TKA.

Article Synopsis
  • The distal radius fracture is the most common type of bone fracture in people, especially in older adults over 65 years old.
  • This study compared two treatments: surgery and conservative care to see which one was better for wrist function and patient satisfaction.
  • Results showed that patients who had surgery were much happier and had better wrist function compared to those who had conservative treatment, especially after 3, 6, and 12 months.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyse the functional outcome and the conversion rate to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) after surgically treated tibial plateau fractures (TPF).

Methods: All patients undergoing surgical treatment of TPF at a single institution between January 2003 and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and Tegner activity scale (TAS) were collected.

(1) Background: Magnesium-based implants use has become a research focus in recent years. Radiolucent areas around inserted screws are still worrisome. The objective of this study was to investigate the first 18 patients treated using MAGNEZIX CS screws.

The current study aims to assess the reliability of 6 range-of-motion measurement methods for the thumb carpometacarpal joint: Pollexograph-thumb, Pollexograph-metacarpal, radius-metacarpal goniometry, intermetacarpal goniometry, intermetacarpal distance, and thumb-distal-interphalangeal distance. A senior hand surgeon, an experienced resident, and a less experienced research fellow evaluated the dominant hands of 29 healthy subjects. All 6 methods were performed for radial adduction, radial abduction, and palmar abduction, but only distance methods were measured for palmar adduction.

Although breast implants have been in clinical use for almost 6 decades and have undergone considerable development during this time, implant rupture is still a dreaded long-term complication. Some obvious external factors, such as trauma, can lead to implant rupture, but many studies have reported a high rate of "spontaneous" implant rupture. Herein, we present two cases with the aim of raising awareness of a new possible cause of "spontaneous" implant rupture: mechanical irritation by bony protrusions.
