Technical description of the use of selective perfusion techniques during the Norwood procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Since the introduction of the Norwood procedure for surgical palliation of hypoplastic left heart syndrome in 1983, refinements have been made to the original procedure to improve patient outcomes while still accomplishing the original goals of the procedure. One of these refinements has been the introduction of regional selective perfusion to limit the duration of circulatory arrest times and optimize the regional flow distribution. In this paper we describe our technique for performing selective cerebral and lower body perfusion during the Norwood procedure.

A 2007 survey of extracorporeal life support members: personnel and equipment.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used to support patients with cardiopulmonary failure in the intensive care unit. The purpose of this study is to determine what professional qualifications, equipment, and tests are used by established ECMO programs registered with the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). A survey link (Survey-Monkey) was e-mailed to the 110 registered ELSO program coordinators.

Mitral valve replacement in a patient with sickle cell disease using perioperative exchange transfusion.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic hemoglobinopathy in which a significant number of red blood cells carry hemoglobin-S as opposed to normal red blood cells that contain hemoglobin-A. Under certain conditions such as hypoxia, acidosis, and hypothermia, the red blood cells containing hemoglobin-S will sickle, leading to occlusion of the microvasculature. As such, patients with sickle cell disease present unique challenges during heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

The chabot emotional differentiation scale: a theoretically and psychometrically sound instrument for measuring Bowen's intrapsychic aspect of differentiation.

Bowen's theory (1978) of differentiation is the personality variable most critical to mature development and the attainment of psychological health. The study of psychological differentiation has been confounded by confusion regarding the constructs being studied and the measurement tools used to assess them. The purpose of this review is to introduce and demonstrate the utility and importance of the Chabot Emotional Differentiation Scale (CED; Chabot, 1993), a self-report instrument specifically designed to measure Bowen's intrapsychic aspect of differentiation, or an individual's ability to distinguish between emotional and intellectual functioning and utilize intellect in emotionally charged situations.
