Down Syndrome (DS) is a commonly occurring chromosomal abnormality. The incidence increases with advancing maternal age over 35 years. Over the last three decades, tremendous progress has been made in the medical and surgical treatment of these infants.

Hospitals and moral imperatives: ethics consults at a university medical center.

Ethics consults at a university medical center share many qualities with those in other settings. What makes them different, if at all, is a difference of degree, not kind. All consult services share the tasks of exploring cases for possible recommendation, contributing to the development of institutional and public policy, and educating colleagues and patients about medical ethics dimensions.

Response to Erich Loewy: commentary.

The capacity to suffer, the vulnerability with respect to suffering, confers on all animals with that capacity (not just human beings) a prima facie right not to be caused suffering. Nurturing in order to stave off such suffering is the first act of the community toward the individual, primarily in infancy. Hence for Loewy, autonomy, the gradual growth of self-determination in individuals, is grounded in a broader moral commitment of the community, that of beneficence.
