In Hb J-Singapore, the alpha78(EF7)Asn-->Asp and alpha79(EF8)Ala-->Gly substitutions were initially thought to be genetic mutations. Subsequent studies on other similar hemoglobin variants suggested that the Asn-->Asp change was a posttranslational modification. Nevertheless, lack of DNA evidence made it difficult to confirm the deamidation in Hb J-Singapore.

Autofluorescence is an immunophenotypic characteristic of leukemic blasts in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). We examined the fluorescent intensity of isotype controls in 25 cases of APML and 25 controls with acute myeloid leukemia. The fluorescence of the FITC- and PE-conjugated controls was consistently higher in APML.

Unlabelled: Patients are inquiring about mini-incision primary total hip arthroplasty with increasing frequency. There are no published randomized controlled trials to substantiate claims that the mini-incision direct lateral approach is better than a standard approach. The purpose of our study was to review our initial experience with the mini-incision technique through the direct lateral approach, with the intent of implementing a randomized controlled trial if the approach could be shown as safe and effective.
