Article Synopsis
  • This text outlines a clinical framework aimed at diagnosing and treating interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome based on a systematic review of literature from 1983 to 2009.
  • While there was limited evidence for diagnosis, 86 treatment articles were assessed to develop a treatment guideline, which classifies evidence strength into high, moderate, or low ratings.
  • The guidelines include an algorithm for management and identify various treatment options while noting that approaches may evolve as new evidence emerges.

Purpose: Amitriptyline is frequently used to treat patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome. The evidence to support this practice is derived mainly from a small, single site clinical trial and case reports.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial of amitriptyline in subjects with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome who were naïve to therapy.
