Introduction: The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has begun implementing Competence by Design (CBD). However, it is unclear how much urology trainees and faculty know about CBD, their attitudes towards this change, and their willingness to embrace and participate in this new model of training.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted through an online survey, which was administered to all trainees and faculty at Canadian urology programs prior to the implementation of CBD.

Introduction: There are several reported risk factors for undescended testis (UDT) and hypospadias (HYP). Also, a family history of UDT or HYP has not been accounted for in prior studies, and doing so may influence these independent risk estimates.

Study Design: A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using linked administrative databases in Ontario, Canada, to identify all live male newborns born between 1997 and 2007, and it was determined whether they underwent an orchidopexy or HYP repair within 5 years of birth.

Introduction: Variability in the success rates for the endoscopic correction of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) has prompted a debate regarding the use of routine postoperative voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG). This study examines the predictive performance of intraoperative mound morphology (IMM) and the presence of a postoperative ultrasound mound (PUM) on radiologic success, as well as investigates the role of using these two predictive factors as a composite tool to predict VUR resolution after endoscopic treatment.

Enterococcus faecalis persistence in pediatric patients treated with antibiotic prophylaxis for recurrent urinary tract infections.

Aim: Enterococcus faecalis is one of the most common causes of recurrent urinary tract infection (RUTI), yet enterococcal pathogenesis is poorly understood. Our aims were to identify the prevalence of enterococci in RUTI patients and characterize the enterococcal response to nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

Introduction: Recent studies have suggested contradictory trends in the incidence of undescended testis (UDT) and hypospadias (HYP), partly because of methodological issues and ascertainment bias. The recently described association of "testicular dysgenesis syndrome" links concomitant UDT and HYP, with decreasing sperm counts and testicular cancer. Current guidelines suggest that orchidopexy for UDT should be performed by 18 months of age.

The goal of this article is to provide information about the risks of sudden cardiac death in athletes by reviewing the epidemiology and describing the current screening recommendations of the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology. The specifics of and reasons for differences between screening guidelines in the United States and the screening guidelines in Europe are highlighted.

Background: Racial differences in post-liver transplantation (LT) outcomes are identified in predominantly male cohorts. Despite known sex differences in a spectrum of liver-related outcomes, it is not known how race influences graft outcomes in women.

Methods: Using the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, we examined race and ethnicity and graft loss (death or retransplant) in women transplanted from 2002 to 2012.

Cellular microtubules are influenced by a multitude of regulatory proteins, but how their activities are spatiotemporally coordinated within the cell, or on specific microtubules, remains mostly obscure. The conserved kinesin-8 motor proteins are important microtubule regulators, and family members from diverse species combine directed motility with the ability to modify microtubule dynamics.

Electrophysiological evidence for preserved primacy of lexical prediction in aging.

Young adults show consistent neural benefits of predictable contexts when processing upcoming words, but these benefits are less clear-cut in older adults. Here we disentangle the neural correlates of prediction accuracy and contextual support during word processing, in order to test current theories that suggest that neural mechanisms underlying predictive processing are specifically impaired in older adults. During a sentence comprehension task, older and younger readers were asked to predict passage-final words and report the accuracy of these predictions.

Plasmodium parasite exploits host aquaporin-3 during liver stage malaria infection.

Within the liver a single Plasmodium parasite transforms into thousands of blood-infective forms to cause malaria. Here, we use RNA-sequencing to identify host genes that are upregulated upon Plasmodium berghei infection of hepatocytes with the hypothesis that host pathways are hijacked to benefit parasite development. We found that expression of aquaporin-3 (AQP3), a water and glycerol channel, is significantly induced in Plasmodium-infected hepatocytes compared to uninfected cells.

Prediction of upcoming words during reading has been suggested to enhance the efficiency of discourse processing. Emerging models have postulated that predictive mechanisms require synchronous firing of neural networks, but to date, this relationship has been investigated primarily through oscillatory activity in narrow frequency bands. A recently-developed measure proposed to reflect broadband neural activity - and thereby synchronous neuronal firing - is 1/f neural noise extracted from EEG spectral power.

Repair of congenital esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula repair in Ontario over the last 20years: Volume and outcomes.

Background/purpose: This study was designed to determine the volume, postoperative surgical outcomes and, if possible, the relationship between outcome and institutional / surgeon volume in neonates undergoing repair of esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) over the last 20years in Ontario.

Methods: Using administrative databases, a population based cohort study of patients undergoing EA-TEF repair in Ontario between 1993 and 2012 was conducted.

Results: 465 patients with the diagnosis of EA-TEF met inclusion criteria.
