Purpose: Current technologies to define the zone of acute peripheral nerve injury intraoperatively are limited by surgical experience, time, cumbersome electrodiagnostic equipment, and interpreter reliability. In this pilot study, we evaluated a real-time, label-free optical technique for intraoperative nerve injury imaging. We hypothesize that fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIm) will detect a difference between the time-resolved fluorescence signatures for acute crush injuries versus uninjured segments of peripheral nerves in sheep.

Objective: Sjögren's Disease (SjD) subjects have decreased lacrimal/salivary gland function. Studies have proposed that autoantibodies targeting G-protein-coupled muscarinic acetylcholine-type-3-receptor (M3R) are potential clinical markers for SjD. We hypothesized that rabbits/mice immunized with 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE)-modified/unmodified Ro60 will develop an autoimmunity, specifically a SjD phenotype, thus expressing increased levels of anti-M3R antibodies.

We have synthesized Murraya Koenigii leaves powder-derived carbon nanodots (CNDs) by hydrothermal method. A tribute to our commitment to environmental sustainability is the unique composition of our CNDs, which are made entirely of natural carbon sources and a green solvent, water. Our further efforts to improve performance led us to start making nitrogen-doped CNDs.

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a multifactorial condition that may affect patients who sustain a fracture in the upper and lower extremities. Prior investigations have formed a foundation for exploring a possible association between psychiatric disorders and the development of CRPS; however, current studies are conflicted regarding the existence and temporality of a relationship between psychiatric disorders and the potential development of CRPS.

Questions/purposes: (1) Are patients with preexisting anxiety and mood disorders (AMDs) at increased risk of receiving a diagnosis of CRPS after upper or lower extremity fractures? (2) Are patients with preexisting AMDs at increased risk of being diagnosed with CRPS after surgical fixation of their fracture?

This study investigates the effects of welfare reform-a major policy shift in the United States that increased low-income mothers' employment and reliance on earnings instead of cash assistance-on the quality of the home environments mothers provide for their preschool-age children. Using empirical methods designed to identify plausibly causal effects, we estimate the effects of welfare reform on validated survey and observational measures of maternal behaviors that support children's cognitive skills and emotional adjustment and the material goods that parents purchase to stimulate their children's skill development. The results suggest that welfare reform did not affect the amount of time and material resources mothers devoted to cognitively stimulating activities with their young children.

Sea cucumbers contain a wide range of biomolecules, including sulfated polysaccharides (SPs), with immense therapeutic and nutraceutical potential. SPs in sea cucumbers are mainly fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FCS) and fucan sulfate (FS) which exhibit a series of pharmacological effects, including anticoagulant activity, in several biological systems. FCS is a structurally distinct glycosaminoglycan in the sea cucumber body wall, and its biological properties mainly depend on the degree of sulfation, position of sulfate group, molecular weight, and distribution of branches along the backbone.

Badgers () are a major tuberculosis (TB) reservoir in Europe, with the potential to transmit infection to cattle. Here we assessed whether a recently described oral tuberculosis vaccine based on heat-inactivated (HIMB) delivered as edible baits, can protect badgers from infection. Eight badgers were given individually five baits, each one consisting of a ball of peanut butter, natural peanut and oat flakes including a dose of the vaccine containing 5 × 10 colony-forming units.
