Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) develop where abnormal endothelial signalling allows direct connections between arteries and veins. Mutations in RASA1, a Ras GTPase activating protein, lead to AVMs in humans and, as we show, in zebrafish rasa1 mutants. rasa1 mutants develop cavernous AVMs that subsume part of the dorsal aorta and multiple veins in the caudal venous plexus (CVP) - a venous vascular bed.

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Transformer Fault Diagnosis Using Vibration Signals.

Fast and accurate fault diagnosis is crucial to transformer safety and cost-effectiveness. Recently, vibration analysis for transformer fault diagnosis is attracting increasing attention due to its ease of implementation and low cost, while the complex operating environment and loads of transformers also pose challenges. This study proposed a novel deep-learning-enabled method for fault diagnosis of dry-type transformers using vibration signals.

Complete postsurgical left ventricular-aortic discontinuity and pseudoaneurysm formation.

Background: Left ventricular outflow tract pseudoaneurysm is a rare but potentially fatal complication of aortic valve replacement, infective endocarditis (IE), and suture dehiscence. Left ventricular-aortic discontinuity is a severe and uncommon manifestation of IE. For patients who have a long-standing history of endocarditis, periannular lesions in the aortic valve may rupture, leading to the rare occurrence of complete, or total, left ventricular-aortic discontinuity.

A RARE CASE OF RAPIDLY ENLARGING MYELOLIPOMA IN SICKLE CELL DISEASE.

Objective: Adrenal myelolipoma (AM) is a benign tumor composed of mature fat cells and hemopoietic elements. Most AMs are incidental findings on imaging and clinically asymptomatic. The purpose of this case report is to describe a rare case of AM and explore its clinical manifestations, imaging features, and treatment.

Stroke as the initial presentation of Takayasu's arteritis: A case report.

In this study, we report the case of a pediatric neurology stroke patient who was ultimately diagnosed with Takayasu's Arteritis. Our case describes a 14-year-old Hispanic female with no significant past medical history who presented to an outside hospital for acute onset of confusion and right sided weakness. She was given tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) at the outside hospital and transferred as a stroke alert.

Exploration of Mistreatment and Burnout Among Resident Physicians: a Cross-Specialty Observational Study.

Purpose: Resident physician mistreatment and burnout are widespread issues in medical training, but the association between the two remains unclear. This study examines the prevalence and types of mistreatment among resident physicians in core specialties and its association with burnout syndrome as well as feelings of depression/anxiety.

Methods: A cross-sectional, survey-based observational study of medical residents was conducted at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in 2014.

A Preoperative Cognitive Screening Test Predicts Increased Length of Stay in a Frail Population: A Retrospective Case-Control Study.

Background: Frailty is associated with adverse perioperative outcomes including major morbidity, mortality, and increased length of stay. We sought to elucidate the role that a preoperatively assessed Mini-Cog can play in assessing the risk of adverse perioperative outcomes in a population at high risk of frailty.

Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, patients who were >60 years of age, nonambulatory, or had >5 documented medications were preoperatively assessed for handgrip strength, walking speed, and Mini-Cog score.

Ultraviolet Radiation Inhibits Mammary Carcinogenesis in an ER-Negative Murine Model by a Mechanism Independent of Vitamin D.

Three decades ago, the Garlands postulated that vitamin D produced in the skin by ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to pre-D has anticancer effects, thus triggering more than 9,500 publications on D and cancer. Here, we report that UVR treatment of transgenic mice of the well-established C3(1)/SV40 Tag mammary cancer model significantly inhibits both autochthonous carcinogenesis and allograft tumor growth, but in contrast neither dietary nor topical D influences mammary carcinogenesis in this specific mouse model. Furthermore, UVR's inhibitory effects occur irrespective of whether or not the treatment increases circulating D in the mice.

Dermatology Medical Education: A Multicenter Survey Study of the Undergraduate Perspective of the Dermatology Clinical Clerkship.

Background/aims: Limited data are available regarding the undergraduate dermatology clinical clerkship curriculum in the United States. Our primaryaim is to assess medical students' perspectives of the dermatology clinical clerkship.

Methods: A multicenter survey study was conducted, which included four California dermatology academic programs.

Application to dermatology residency is a highly competitive process. Although factors associated with successfully matching have been studied, less is known regarding the ability of admissions committees to screen applicants in a uniform manner or the importance of the interview in ranking applicants. Our goal was to retrospectively measure our admission committee evaluators' concordance regarding residency application credentials and interview performance, and ultimately the effects on final applicant ranking.

Infrared pupillometry helps to detect and predict delirium in the post-anesthesia care unit.

This study evaluates the capability of pupillary parameters to detect and predict delirium in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU-D) following general anesthesia. PACU-D may complicate and prolong the patient's postoperative course, consequently increasing hospital costs. After institutional approval, 47 patients undergoing surgical interventions with general anesthesia were included in the study.

Effect of a Pre-Treatment Educational Video in Improving Patient Satisfaction with 5-Fluorouracil Treatment for Actinic Keratoses: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction: Patient treatment satisfaction and adherence may be affected by the initial understanding of outcomes in the treatment of actinic keratoses with 5-fluorouracil 5% cream (5-FU). Pre-treatment educational videos may optimize this understanding. The objective of this study was to determine whether prospective patient viewing of an educational video delineating treatment effects and expectations improves patient satisfaction and treatment completion rates for the treatment of actinic keratoses with 5-FU.

Several factors can affect performance of an ultrasound system such as quality of excitation signal and ultrasound transducer behaviour. Nonlinearity of piezoelectric ultrasound transducers is a key determinant in designing a proper driving power supply. Although, the nonlinearity of piezoelectric transducer impedance has been discussed in different literatures, the trend of the nonlinearity at different frequencies with respect to excitation voltage variations has not been clearly investigated in practice.

ImportanceThe dynamics of the medical care team, including interactions between physicians and nursing staff, has a large role to play in patient care, patient satisfaction, and future possible reimbursement determination. In order to implement changes to improve this dynamic within the medical team, it is imperative that appropriate assessments are completed to determine baseline satisfaction of our patients and nursing staff in addition to provider self-assessment.ObjectiveWe aimed to investigate patient and nursing staff satisfaction with regards to provider quality of care in an outpatient academic dermatology clinic setting.

The goal of this study is to introduce a novel robust load frequency control (LFC) strategy for micro-grid(s) (MG(s)) in islanded mode operation. Admittedly, power generators in MG(s) cannot supply steady electric power output and sometimes cause unbalance between supply and demand. Battery energy storage system (BESS) is one of the effective solutions to these problems.

Practical pearls for oral procedures.

We provide an overview of clinically relevant principles of oral surgical procedures required in the workup and management of oral mucosal diseases. An understanding of the fundamental concepts of how to perform safely and effectively minor oral procedures is important to the practicing dermatologist and can minimize the need for patient referrals. This chapter reviews the principles of minor oral procedures, including incisional, excisional, and punch biopsies, as well as minor salivary gland excision.

Time-Dependent Computed Tomographic Perfusion Thresholds for Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Background And Purpose: Among patients with acute ischemic stroke, we determine computed tomographic perfusion (CTP) thresholds associated with follow-up infarction at different stroke onset-to-CTP and CTP-to-reperfusion times.

Methods: Acute ischemic stroke patients with occlusion on computed tomographic angiography were acutely imaged with CTP. Noncontrast computed tomography and magnectic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging between 24 and 48 hours were used to delineate follow-up infarction.

Dopamine Transporter Activity Is Modulated by α-Synuclein.

The duration and strength of the dopaminergic signal are regulated by the dopamine transporter (DAT). Drug addiction and neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases have all been associated with altered DAT activity.
