Article Synopsis
  • This study assesses the outcomes of adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma in obese versus nonobese patients, using data from 46 centers from 2012 to 2022.
  • It finds that while obesity does not significantly increase the rate of complications or comprehensive complication index (CCI), it does lead to a longer hospital stay for patients.
  • Furthermore, minimally invasive surgical techniques, like laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, are associated with less morbidity in obese patients, and a retroperitoneal approach may provide additional benefits.

Conventional open thyroidectomy is defined as a gold standard in thyroid gland disease treatment. However, progressive surgery methods such as endoscopic technique provide better structure visualisation and improved cosmetic effect. Our study aim is to compare conventional open (COH) and endoscopic transaxillary hemithyroidectomy (TAH) and define the learning curve for TAH procedure.

Background: As the diagnostic and treatment options for diabetes improve, more attention nowadays is being paid to the exact identification of the etiopathological mechanism of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Insulin resistance (IR) is a pathogenetic background for T2DM. Several studies demonstrate that miRNAs play an important role in systemic inflammation and thus in T2DM pathogenesis.

Background: The most popular miRNA quantitation technique is RQ-PCR with relative gene expression method that requires an endogenous control (EC) gene for data normalization. However, there are insufficient data and selection criteria on the most suitable ECs for miRNA expression studies in many cancer types including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Therefore, in this study we evaluated the impact of chosen EC and archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) PTC tissue age on estimated target miRNA expression.

We analyzed five miRNA molecules (miR-221; miR-222; miR-146b; miR-21; miR-181b) in the plasma of patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), nodular goiter (NG) and healthy controls (HC) and evaluated their diagnostic value for differentiation of PTC from NG and HC. Preoperative PTC plasma miRNA expression ( = 49) was compared with plasma miRNA in the HC group ( = 57) and patients with NG ( = 23). It was demonstrated that miR-221; miR-222; miR-146b; miR-21 and miR-181b were overexpressed in preoperative PTC plasma samples compared to HC ( < 0.

Many miRNAs and cancer-related mutations have been proposed as promising molecular markers of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, there are limited data on the correlation between miRNA expression, BRAF mutation, and PTC recurrence. Therefore, to evaluate the potential of BRAF mutation and five selected miRNAs (-146b, -222, -21, -221, -181b) in predicting PTC recurrence, these molecular markers were analyzed in 400 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded PTC tissue specimens.

Background: Long interspersed nuclear elements (LINE-1) sequences constitute a substantial portion of the human genome, and their methylation often correlating with global genomic methylation. Previous studies have highlighted the feasibility of using LINE-1 methylation to discriminate tumors from healthy tissues. However, most studies are based on only a few specific LINE-1 CpG sites.

Background: Hypomethylation of long interspersed element (LINE)-1 has been observed in tumorigenesis when using degenerate assays, which provide an average across all repeats. However, it is unknown whether individual LINE-1 loci or different CpGs within one specific LINE-1 promoter are equally affected by methylation changes. Conceivably, studying methylation changes at specific LINE-1 may be more informative than global assays for cancer diagnostics.

Pancreatic tumors are usually diagnosed at an advanced stage in the progression of the disease, thus reducing the survival chances of the patients. Non-invasive early detection would greatly enhance therapy and survival rates. Toward this aim, we investigated in a pilot study the power of methylation changes in whole blood as predictive markers for the detection of pancreatic tumors.
