Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of pentoxifylline on autism-like behaviors in rat models induced by propionic acid (PPA), focusing on how it influences brain proteins and inflammatory responses.
  • Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: a control group, a PPA group, and a PPA plus pentoxifylline group, with various treatment regimens followed by analysis of brain and blood samples.
  • Results showed that pentoxifylline significantly reduced autism-like behaviors, lowered levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α, increased beneficial brain factors like ATP and nerve growth factor, and improved neuronal health, suggesting its potential as a neurotherapeutic agent for autism.

Background: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the long-arm cast (LAC) and the single sugar-tong splint (SSTS) in the non-operative treatment of distal radius fractures in the geriatric population.

Methods: Patients consulted at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department within the Emergency Department (ED) were reviewed through the electronic archives of a tertiary university hospital over a five-year period. The study included patients aged 65 years and older with a distal radius fracture who required reduction, had successful closed reduction, and had at least six weeks of X-ray follow-up.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a growing public health problem, paralleling the increasing incidence of diabetes. While prevention is most effective treatment for DFUs, challenge remains on selecting the optimal treatment in cases with DFUs. Health sciences have greatly benefited from the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) applications across various fields.

Objectives: Hip fractures are increasingly common among the elderly population, who often present with a high burden of comorbidities necessitating preoperative stabilization. As a result, preoperative cardiology consultations are frequently conducted in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the additional recommendations provided by preoperative cardiology consultations and the impact of consultations on the management and outcomes of elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.

A new chemosensory based on deprotonation and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was developed to detect cyanide in food samples. Deprotonation was facilitated by increasing the acidity of the NH proton in the dibenzosuberenone-based dihydropyridazine chemosensor Pz3 with -CN substituents. Addition of cyanide to acetonitrile and aqueous acetonitrile solution (1/9) of Pz3 resulted in their significant color change from colorless to purple in visible light, accompanied by a strong red shift in the absorption spectrum.

The impact of drug delivery and particulate matter exposure on the human respiratory tract is influenced by various anatomical and physiological factors, particularly the structure of the respiratory tract and its fluid dynamics. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate airflow in two 3D models of the human air conducting zone. The first model uses a combination of CT-scan images and geometrical data from human cadaver to extract the upper and central airways down to the ninth generation, while the second model develops the lung airways from the first Carina to the end of the ninth generation using Kitaoka's deterministic algorithm.

  • Compartment syndrome is a medical emergency that typically requires quick intervention, mainly revolving around the decision to perform a fasciotomy to relieve pressure.
  • The case discussed presents an unusual situation where the actual diagnosis was Munchausen Syndrome, highlighting its unconventional presentation and complexity.
  • The discussion emphasizes that individuals with Munchausen Syndrome can skillfully manipulate medical professionals by researching symptoms and findings, making it crucial for healthcare providers to recognize this syndrome when symptoms and clinical history don't fit typical patterns.

Introduction And Clinical Importance: Human scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, leading to skin damage and subsequent mechanical irritation from scratching. This impaired skin integrity predisposes individuals to skin infections. While the association between scabies and skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes is well-documented, there is limited literature on the risk of surgical site infections in such cases.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of four different immobilization methods [single sugar tong splint (SSTS), double sugar tong splint (DSTS), short arm cast (SAC), and long arm cast (LAC)] commonly used for restricting forearm rotation in the upper extremity.

Methods: Forty healthy volunteers were included in the study. Dominant extremities were used for measurements.

: Sulodexide (SDX) is a drug known for restoring the glycocalyx, thereby offering endothelial protection and regulating permeability. Additionally, it has antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory properties and has shown arterial vasodilatory effects. Endothelial cells play a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis, with their dysfunction being a key contributor to loss in vasodilatory response, especially in arterial pathologies.

Catalyst-free Markovnikov-selective hydrothiolation of unactivated alkenes still remains a great challenge. Herein, we develop a catalyst/metal/solvent-free methodology for the Markovnikov hydrothiolation of unactivated alkenes with in situ prepared dithiocarbamic acids, providing a wide array of alkyl dithiocarbamates. A variety of terminal, internal, cyclic, and acyclic unactivated alkenes were applied successfully in this protocol.

Isolated popliteus injury is a rare clinical condition which can be treated either surgically or conservatively. Factors such as the patient's age, activity level, and cooperation with the medical team are determinants to choose the most optimal treatment option. A 29-year-old female patient presented with a knee injury caused by a low-speed motorcycle accident.

Previously we reported on the bromination of 7-bromonorbornene at different temperatures yielding mixtures of addition products. The structural elucidations of the formed compounds were achieved by NMR spectroscopy. Particularly, the γ-gauche effect and long-range couplings were instrumental in assigning the stereochemistry of the adducts.

Background And Aim: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is caused by the obstruction of the main pulmonary artery due to thrombosis and vascular remodeling. Regarding the need for anticoagulant therapy in CTEPH patients, this study aimed to compare rivaroxaban with warfarin in terms of its efficacy and safety in patients undergoing endarterectomy surgery.

Methods: The study was a parallel clinical trial in patients who underwent endarterectomy following CTEPH.

Due to the high probability of infection and avascular necrosis, traumatic open anterior hip dislocation poses a serious orthopedic emergency. Despite the emergency of the issue, it appears to be an under-researched topic in the literature. In this study, we present open anterior hip dislocation with both trochanteric fractures in a child and review other pediatric cases from the literature.

In this study, a new class of photo- and thermochromic compounds was discovered. Fluorescent dihydropyridazine-appended dibenzosuberenone derivatives with central seven-membered rings were converted to colorless spiro anthrones with central six-membered rings by thermal isomerization or visible-light (420 nm) irradiation. Under UV light (350 nm), the spiro anthrones converted back to benzosuberenones.
