Objectives: To determine a possible correlation between SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and altered fetal behavior.

Methods: Kurjak's antenatal neurodevelopmental test (KANET) was applied from 28 to 40 weeks in 38 gestations (group A) diagnosed with COVID-19 infection during the first week and 43 non-COVID pregnant women (group B).

Results: No statistically significant differences considering maternal age (33±3.

Objective: Maternal COVID-19 infection during pregnancy has been associated with adverse neonatal outcomes, such as prematurity and neonatal morbidity. Those adverse events are mainly attributed to maternal factors, rather than to the neonatal infection itself. Our aim is to add our experience and present the neonatal outcome of neonates born to mothers with perinatal SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Marine microalgae are considered an important feedstock of multiple valuable metabolic compounds of high biotechnological potential. In this work, the marine microalga was cultivated in different scaled photobioreactors (PBRs). Initially, experiments were performed using two different growth substrates (a modified F/2 and the commercial fertilizer Nutri-Leaf (30% TN-10% P-10% K)) to identify the most efficient and low-cost growth medium.

Background and Objectives: This article presents data from the ongoing Aiginition Longitudinal Biomarker Investigation of Neurodegeneration study (ALBION) regarding baseline clinical characterizations and CSF biomarker profiles, as well as preliminary longitudinal data on clinical progression. Materials and Methods: As of March 2022, 138 participants who either were cognitively normal (CN, n = 99) or had a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 39) had been recruited at the specialist cognitive disorders outpatient clinic at Aiginition Hospital. Clinical characteristics at baseline were provided.

Background: Postoperative hypocalcemia is one of the most common complications after total thyroidectomy. Parathormone (PTH) and calcium levels, measured several hours after surgery, have been suggested as valuable markers for detecting patients at risk for post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia. We aimed to determine if early post-surgery PTH and calcium levels can be used for the early identification of patients at risk for symptomatic hypocalcemia.

Neurons are highly polarized and functionally compartmentalized cells. Under basal conditions, the biogenesis of autophagic vesicles (AVs) was previously shown to take place in the axon tip. As the sequestration of autophagic cargo occurs during the formation of nascent AVs, this would mean that only axonal proteins can be degraded via macroautophagy/autophagy, unless AV biogenesis can also take place on demand, in other neuronal compartments.

The pruning of dendritic spines during development requires autophagy. This process is facilitated by long-term depression (LTD)-like mechanisms, which has led to speculation that LTD, a fundamental form of synaptic plasticity, also requires autophagy. Here, we show that the induction of LTD via activation of NMDA receptors or metabotropic glutamate receptors initiates autophagy in the postsynaptic dendrites in mice.

Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) is an innovative approach for the generation of evolved microbial strains with desired characteristics, by implementing the rules of natural selection as presented in the Darwinian Theory, on the laboratory bench. New as it might be, it has already been used by several researchers for the amelioration of a variety of characteristics of widely used microorganisms in biotechnology. ALE is used as a tool for the deeper understanding of the genetic and/or metabolic pathways of evolution.

Background/aim: Early human milk provides protection against viral infections due to its high nutritional value, abundance of maternal antibodies and the specific role of lactoferrin (Lf). Lf blocks the early interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and host cells by binding to specific cell receptors and has been proposed as a preventative and adjunct treatment for COVID-19. This preliminary report aimed to investigate concentrations of Lf in early milk of SARS-CoV-2 positive mothers versus non-infected controls.

COVID-19 pandemic has raised questions on pregnant women and newborns' management. Guidelines, issued by most international agencies and national bodies, recommend rooming-in and direct breastfeeding. In the early days of this pandemic, breastfeeding practices have been challenged by fear among both parents and healthcare workers occasionally resulting in mother-newborn separation.

Colonic diverticular disease is a common condition, affecting 50% of the population aged above 80. In contrast, rectal diverticular disease is a rare condition with very few cases reported, while symptomatic rectal diverticular disease is even rarer. We present a case of a symptomatic large rectal diverticulum presenting with a retrorectal abscess.

Oleaginous microorganisms are of high biotechnological interest being considered as alternative sources of oil (single cell oil-SCO). Current research for increasing productivity of oleaginous microorganisms is focused on the overexpression of genes implicated in lipid synthesis, the inactivation of genes implicated in storage lipid turnover, and on the suppression of competitive to lipid biosynthesis pathways. An alternative strategy, described here, relies on evolution of Yarrowia lipolytica under alternating environments that promote growth, encourage storage lipid synthesis, and reward high energy-containing cells.

Data concerning fatty acid composition of both substrate and yeast lipids and comparisons of the experimental data with model predictions presented in "Biomodification of fats and oils and scenarios of adding value on renewable fatty materials through microbial fermentations: Modelling and trials with " (Vasiliadou et al., 2018) were provided.

Colonic metastasis from lung cancer is rare, generally asymptomatic and usually develop at advanced cancer stages. Here, we report a case with a resected stage IA lung adenocarcinoma in a 51yo male patient that presented two years later with mild abdominal pain due to intestinal obstruction caused by a metastatic colon tumor. The patient underwent colonoscopy followed by surgical resection and the pathologic report was adenocarcinoma which was the same as that from a lung nodule that was excised two years earlier.

Red foxes, Vulpes vulpes are among the most widely spread carnivores in the world, invading also urban areas and are often parasitized by various ticks and directly exposed to several vector-borne pathogens, including the commonly present "Theileria annae". Considering the paucity of data on the possible vectors of this pathogen and the presence of the infection in various locations across the globe, the aim of our study was to understand the potential role of various environmental factors on the distribution of "T. annae" in red foxes from a well-defined region within the Carpathians, Romania.

Unlabelled: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive and life-threatening infection of the deeper skin layers and subcutaneous tissues that moves along the facial planes.

Objectives: We present the rare case of a patient with necrotizing fasciitis associated with high malignancy b-cell lymphoma. Our purpose is to investigate the probable connection between the two pathologies and evaluate the importance of early surgical intervention.

Background: Angiostrongylus vasorum is the causative agent of canine angiostrongylosis, a severe snail-borne disease of dogs. Red foxes are important natural reservoirs of infection, and surveys of foxes provide a more objective picture of the parasite distribution. Our aim was to investigate the possibility of the presence of A.

Background: Jackals are medium-sized canids from the wolf-like clade, exhibiting a unique combination of ancestral morphotypes, broad trophic niches, and close phylogenetic relationships with the wolf and dog. Thus, they represent a potential host of several pathogens with diverse transmission routes. Recently, populations of the Eurasian golden jackal Canis aureus have expanded into the Western Palaearctic, including most of Europe.
