Adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play pivotal roles in the tumor microenvironment (TME), significantly influencing cancer progression and metastasis. This review explores the plasticity of ASCs, which can transdifferentiate into CAFs under the influence of tumor-derived signals, thus enhancing their secretion of extracellular matrix components and pro-inflammatory cytokines that promote tumorigenesis. We discuss the critical process of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) facilitated by ASCs and CAFs, highlighting its implications for increased invasiveness and therapeutic resistance in cancer cells.

Based on the benefits of different ensemble methods, such as bagging and boosting, which have been studied and adopted extensively in research and practice, where bagging and boosting focus more on reducing variance and bias, this paper presented an optimization ensemble learning-based model for a large pipe failure dataset of water pipe leakage forecasting, something that was not previously considered by others. It is known that tuning the hyperparameters of each base learned inside the ensemble weight optimization process can produce better-performing ensembles, so it effectively improves the accuracy of water pipe leakage forecasting based on the pipeline failure rate. To evaluate the proposed model, the results are compared with the results of the bagging ensemble and boosting ensemble models using the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the mean square error (MSE), the mean absolute error (MAE), and the coefficient of determination (R2) of the bagging ensemble technique, the boosting ensemble technique and optimizable ensemble technique are higher than other models.

Electric fields have been highlighted as a smart reagent in nature's enzymatic machinery, as they can directly trigger or accelerate chemical processes with stereo- and regio-specificity. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication of diabetes, driven by an intricate network of cellular and molecular mechanisms. This study sought to explore the mechanisms by investigating the role of 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE), its receptor GPR31, and microRNA (miR-29) in the context of DR, specifically focusing on their impact on Müller glial cells. We found that 12-HETE activates Müller cells (MCs), elevates glutamate production, and induces inflammatory and oxidative responses, all of which are instrumental in DR progression.

Nanoscale electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) displaying piezoresistance offer unique measurement opportunities at the sub-cellular level, in detectors and sensors, and in emerging generations of integrated electronic devices. Here, we show a single-molecule NEMS piezoresistor that operates utilising constitutional and conformational isomerisation of individual diaryl-bullvalene molecules and can be switched at 850 Hz. Observations are made using scanning tunnelling microscopy break junction (STMBJ) techniques to characterise piezoresistance, combined with blinking (current-time) experiments that follow single-molecule reactions in real time.

In recent years, the hybrid silicon-molecular electronics technology has been gaining significant attention for applications in sensors, photovoltaics, power generation, and molecular electronics devices. However, Si-H surfaces, which are the platforms on which these devices are formed, are prone to oxidation, compromising the mechanical and electronic stability of the devices. Here, we show that when hydrogen is replaced by deuterium, the Si-D surface becomes significantly more resistant to oxidation when either positive or negative voltages are applied to the Si surface.
