Organic dyes are interesting building blocks for the preparation of organic semiconductors as they possess synthetic handles that can be used to functionalize them and, consequently, change their electronic properties. However, reactions to extend their π-conjugated framework through ring annulation have only been scarcely tested. Herein, we report the use of alkyne benzannulation on 2,8-dibromo-dibenzo[def,mno]chrysene (vat orange 3) and 2,9-dibromo-dibenzo[b,def]chrysene (vat orange 1) to extend the conjugation and reduce their bandgap.

The heartbeat originates from spontaneous action potentials in specialized pacemaker cells within the sinoatrial node (SAN) of the right atrium. Voltage-gated potassium channels in SAN myocytes mediate outward K+ currents that regulate cardiac pacemaking by controlling action potential repolarization, influencing the time between heartbeats. Gene expression studies have identified transcripts for many types of voltage-gated potassium channels in the SAN, but most remain of unknown functional significance.

A series of dibenzannulated phenyl-annulated [4,2]-acenoacenes have been synthesized in three straightforward steps from 4,10-dibromoanthanthrone (vat orange 3). The phenyl bisannulation of [4,2]-acenoacene provides extra stability by increasing the overall aromatic character of the molecules, and allows for a 45-80% increase of the molar extinction coefficient () compared to their [5,2]-acenoacene isomers. Depending on the substituents attached to the π-conjugated core, some derivatives exhibit strong aggregation in the solid state with association constant () up to 255 M, resulting in a significant broadening of the absorption spectrum and a substantial decrease of the bandgap value (more than 0.

Halide perovskites hold promise for energy and optoelectronic applications due to their fascinating photophysical properties and facile processing. Among various forms, epitaxial thin single crystals (TSCs) are highly desirable due to their high crystallinity, reduced defects, and easy epitaxial integration with other materials. However, a cost-effective method for obtaining TSCs with perfect epitaxial features remains elusive.

This paper describes a method to gauge the stiffness of nanosized liposomes - a nanoscale vesicle - using a custom-made recapture platform coupled to a solid-state nanopore sensor. The recapture platform electrically profiles a given liposome vesicle multiple times through automated reversal of the voltage polarity immediately following a translocation instance to re-translocate the same analyte through the nanopore - provides better statistical insight at the molecular level by analyzing the same particle multiple times compared to conventional nanopore platforms. The capture frequency depends on the applied voltage with lower voltages (i.

Enveloped viruses fuse with cells to transfer their genetic materials and infect the host cell. Fusion requires deformation of both viral and cellular membranes. Since the rigidity of viral membrane is a key factor in their infectivity, studying the rigidity of viral particles is of great significance in understating viral infection.

This paper describes a general approach for transferring clean single-layer graphene onto silicon nitride nanopore devices and the use of the electron beam of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to drill size-controlled nanopores in freely suspended graphene. Besides nanopore drilling, we also used the TEM to heal and completely close the unwanted secondary holes formed by electron beam damage during the drilling process. We demonstrate electron beam assisted shrinking of irregularly shaped 40-60 nm pores down to 2 nm, exhibiting an exquisite control of graphene nanopore diameter.

Solid-state nanopores have been widely used in the past for single-particle analysis of nanoparticles, liposomes, exosomes and viruses. The shape of soft particles, particularly liposomes with a bilayer membrane, can greatly differ inside the nanopore compared to bulk solution as the electric field inside the nanopores can cause liposome electrodeformation. Such deformations can compromise size measurement and characterization of particles, but are often neglected in nanopore resistive pulse sensing.

Membrane deformation of nano-vesicles is crucial in many cellular processes such as virus entry into the host cell, membrane fusion, and endo- and exocytosis; however, studying the deformation of sub-100 nm soft vesicles is very challenging using the conventional techniques. In this paper, we report detecting co-translocational deformation of individual 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) nano-liposomes using solid-state nanopores. Electrokinetic translocation through the nanopore caused the soft DOPC liposomes (85 nm diameter) to change their shape, which we attribute to the strong electric field strength and physical confinement inside the pore.

Introduction. Tooth avulsion in the young permanent dentition is a frequent finding, and its prognosis depends on the treatment of the avulsed tooth before replantation, the extra-alveolar time, the storage medium, and the patient's general health. The present report describes management of an immature avulsed lower central incisor 90 minutes after the accident.

Introduction. If the teeth are impacted by a chronic irritant, the pulp space possibly will undergo calcific changes that may impede access opening during root canal treatment. In such cases that conventional endodontic treatment is impossible or impractical, intentional replantation may be considered as a last solution to preserve the tooth.

In this paper we propose a novel method to extract dynamic regulatory pathways from time-series DNA microarray data. To this aim, first a specialized clustering technique is applied that utilizes the available heuristic information about the biological system to form the clusters. Then, an auto regressive (AR) model is applied to model the interactions among all genes and to predict the gene expressions for the next time steps.

We propose a novel technique that constructs gene regulatory networks from DNA microarray data and gene-protein databases and then applies Mason rule to systematically search for the most dominant regulators of the network. The algorithm then recommends the identified dominant regulator genes as the best candidates for future knock-out experiments. Actively choosing the genes for knock-out experiments allows optimal perturbation of the pathway and therefore produces the most informative DNA microarray data for pathway identification purposes.
