Histopathological evaluation of thrombus in patients presenting with stent thrombosis. A multicenter European study: a report of the prevention of late stent thrombosis by an interdisciplinary global European effort consortium.

Background: Stent thrombosis (ST) is a rare but serious complication following percutaneous coronary intervention. Analysis of thrombus composition from patients undergoing catheter thrombectomy may provide important insights into the pathological processes leading to thrombus formation. We performed a large-scale multicentre study to evaluate thrombus specimens in patients with ST across Europe.

Antithrombotic therapy in the anticoagulated patient undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with coronary stenting.

Purpose Of Review: Despite being the subject of extensive research, the optimal antithrombotic therapy for patients on chronic oral anticoagulation (OAC) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent implantation is still unknown. This review presents the latest data regarding this much-debated topic.

Recent Findings: Dual therapy, with clopidogrel (a P2Y12 inhibitor) and OAC, may be an alternative to triple therapy, which usually consists of aspirin and clopidogrel in addition to OAC, in terms of improving clinical outcomes in patients on chronic OAC following PCI with stent implantation.
