Objective: To confirm if severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can be detected in semen of men with acute coronavirus disease 2019 and if their male hormone profile (testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, sex hormone binding globulin, and free androgen index) is adversely affected during the acute phase of infection and any relation to the and/or expression in human semen.
Design: Clinical study.
Setting: National University Hospital, Singapore.
Accessible and adaptable nucleic acid diagnostics remains a critical challenge in managing the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Here, an integrated molecular nanotechnology that enables direct and programmable detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA targets in native patient specimens is reported. Termed synergistic coupling of responsive equilibrium in enzymatic network (SCREEN), the technology leverages tunable, catalytic molecular nanostructures to establish an interconnected, collaborative architecture.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: The vast majority of COVID-19 cases in Singapore have occurred amongst migrant workers. This paper examined trends in the hospitalised cases and tested the assumption that the low severity of disease was related to the relatively young affected population.
Methods: All patients with PCR-positive SARS-CoV-2 admitted from February to April 2020 were divided into: (i) imported cases, (ii) locally-transmitted cases outside migrant worker dormitories and (iii) migrant worker dormitory cases.
Background: By estimating N95 respirator demand based on simulated epidemics, we aim to assist planning efforts requiring estimations of respirator demand for the healthcare system to continue operating safely in the coming months.
Methods: We assess respiratory needs over the course of mild, moderate and severe epidemic scenarios within Singapore as a case study using a transmission dynamic model. The number of respirators required within the respiratory isolation wards and intensive care units was estimated over the course of the epidemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken over the world at an unprecedented scale. As Infectious Diseases fellows, this has come straight into the heart of our specialty and created a unique impact on our training progress and perspective. Here, we reflect on our early experiences during the first three months of battling COVID-19 in Singapore and glean some lessons for this pandemic and beyond.

The National University Hospital (NUH) is Singapore's third largest hospital with 1200 beds, heavy clinical workloads, and major roles in research and teaching.
Main Body: With memories of SARS still vivid, there was an urgent requirement for the NUH Division of Infectious Diseases to adapt-undergoing major reorganization to face rapidly changing priorities while ensuring usual essential services and standards.
