The proportion of the population over age 65 years is steadily increasing in Canada and the elderly who are unable to live independently are frequently institutionalized in chronic care facilities. We report our observations on movement disorders (MD) in an institutionalized elderly population of Saskatchewan. A representative sample of 67 subjects aged > or = 65 years had a detailed neurological evaluation on three separate occasions.

A set of overlapping cDNA clones was used to determine the nucleotide sequence of RNA 4. ApMV RNA 4 was found to contain an open reading frame (ORF) of 666 nucleotides, which was flanked by 5' and 3' non-translated sequences of 55 and 264 nucleotides, respectively.

All pigs were housed in groups of four until approximately 30 kg body weight. The boars were then placed under test and assigned to a group pen (GP) containing eight boards or to individual pens (IP) and fed a 16% CP diet at A or R levels.

Two monoclonal antibodies (MAb PAV-IL-22 kDa and MAb PAV-IL-50 kDa) raised against BYDV-PAV-IL could specifically detect the presence of the 72-kDa readthrough protein in extracts from the BYDV-infected leaf tissue. The results suggest that ORF 5 (50-kDa protein) is translated by readthrough of ORF 3 (22-kDa coat protein) to produce the 72-kDa protein.

Some IL and MN strains, but not the NY strain, could be detected by ELISA with a monoclonal antibody raised against BYDV-RPV-NY. The region of the viral genome representing the coat protein gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction, cloned and sequenced.

Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV-PAV-IL) was detected with biotinylated in vitro transcript cDNA using a chemiluminescent substrate on nylon membranes. Signals were detected on X-ray film and quantified using either a densitometer or an ELISA plate reader. The time required for sample preparation was reduced so that the entire protocol could be completed in two days.

No significant differences were found between controls and all depressed patients or between melancholic and nonmelancholic depressed patients. Treatment of the depressed patients with amitriptyline or fluoxetine over a 6-week period resulted in clinical improvement and in a significant increase in plasma PAA concentrations.

Three variations in the ELISA procedure were used in an attempt to understand the basis for serological relationships among three isolates of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV-RPV-I from Illinois, BYDV-RPV-N from New York and BYDV-PAV from Illinois), beet western yellows virus (BWYV) and soybean dwarf virus (SDV). Detection of serological relationships was dependent on the state of the virus particle (e.g.

Instruments included a truncated form of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule, the symptom checklist 90 revised (SCL-90-R), the McGill Pain Questionnaire, and life events, physical activity, and family history questionnaires. Neither panic disorder nor self-rated anxiety were more common in the mitral valve prolapse group.

We have attempted to correct this deficit in our knowledge by using data from an international survey of health care utilization performed in 1968-9 and from the Canada Health Survey (1978-9), the Health Promotion Survey (1985) and the National Alcohol and Other Drugs Survey (1989) to examine sedative-hypnotic use among individuals aged 15 or more. The results suggest that the use of these drugs in Canada is about average for an industrialized society.

For hybridizations, filters had each RNA blotted in duplicate dots at 10 ng/dot. Random-primed cDNA probes were prepared from 300 ng of each RNA and used to probe filters at three levels of stringency.

Factor analysis indicated a coherent agoraphobia factor, with less coherent blood-injury and social phobia factors. Discriminant analysis showed a high degree of correct classification of diagnosed agoraphobic, blood-injury and social phobic patients particularly for agoraphobia.

Serological, biochemical and genetic methods will be necessary to clarify relationships among luteoviruses.

This paper provides a cross-sectional analysis of the physical and emotional well-being of employed and unemployed workers. The data used consists of a sub-sample (N = 14,313) drawn from the Canada Health Survey's national probability sample (N = 31,688). The analysis indicates substantial health differences between employed and unemployed individuals.

Conditions for maximizing detection of a California isolate of beet western yellows virus (BWYV) were investigated with the double-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system. Within-plate variability was found to account for less than 1% of the total variation observed on individual microtiter plates. Variability across plates was greater than within plates and accounted for less than 10% of the total variation.

The frequency of symptoms varied with age, grade level and average marks, with sex being the most significant variation.

This study deals with the relationship between social support and mental health. This relationship was conceptualized as a multi-faceted one which may be understood in terms of direct (main), protective (buffering) and compensatory effects. Hypotheses relating to these effects were evaluated in terms of spousal/community support and job strains (pressure, autonomy, opportunities) among a sample of 455 married males who were employed on a full-time basis.
