Objective: In this study, we performed a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to assess the frequency of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) flares in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and patients undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT), hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and kidney transplant (KT).

Methods: Literature from 1973 to 2023 was searched for studies on the frequency of lupus flares after RRT. Data were extracted for ESRD and each RRT modality.

Objective: Previous studies showed a decline in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) mortality rates from 1968 to 2013, yet mortality rates remained high relative to non-SLE mortality rates, with notable disparities. We aimed to delineate demographic characteristics associated with SLE deaths and map out the national and geographic trends of the last two decades.

Methods: We analyzed SLE deaths data from 1999 to 2020 using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research Multiple Cause of Death database.

Effective construction waste (CW) management, mainly concrete, brick, and steel, is a critical challenge due to its significant environmental and economic impacts. This study addresses this challenge by proposing multiple linear regression models to predict waste generation in residential buildings within the Egyptian construction industry, considering the influence of factors such as building design and site management features. Using data from 25 case studies, the models demonstrated high predictive accuracy, with adjusted R² values of 0.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening disease that is caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, a gene that is expressed in multiple organs. There are several primary tissue models of CF disease, including nasal epithelial cultures and rectal organoids, that are effective in reporting the potential efficacy of mutation-targeted therapies called CFTR modulators. However, there is the well-documented variation in tissue dependent, therapeutic response amongst CF patients, even those with the same CF-causing mutation.

Complex deep learning models trained on very large datasets have become key enabling tools for current research in natural language processing and computer vision. By providing pre-trained models that can be fine-tuned for specific applications, they enable researchers to create accurate models with minimal effort and computational resources. Large scale genomics deep learning models come in two flavors: the first are large language models of DNA sequences trained in a self-supervised fashion, similar to the corresponding natural language models; the second are supervised learning models that leverage large scale genomics datasets from ENCODE and other sources.

Background/objectives: Routine screening electrocardiograms (ECGs) prior to starting medications for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remain controversial. This real-world study assessed corrected QT (QTc) interval data from pediatric patients who had a baseline ECG performed prior to initiating treatment with ADHD medications and ≥6 months of clinical follow-up.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of children aged 2-18 years diagnosed with ADHD with/without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at child neurology clinics in Jordan (June 2019 and June 2021) was performed, and children were prescribed with ADHD medications to manage symptoms.

Introduction: Ectopic adrenocortical adenomas are infrequent adrenal tumors that deviate from their usual location. Herein, we report a case of an ectopic black adrenocortical adenoma situated in the abdominal wall, intricately linked to the head of the pancreas.

Case Presentation: A 27-year-old female presented to the emergency room with severe right iliac pain, nausea, vomiting, and high fever.

Background: Currently, there are no therapies targeting specific pathogenic pathways in myocarditis. IL (interleukin)-1 blockade has shown promise in preclinical studies and case reports. We hypothesized that blockade of IL1RAP (IL-1 receptor accessory protein), a shared subunit of the IL-1, IL-33, and IL-36 receptors, could be more efficient than IL-1 blockade alone.

Novel treatments for extensive full-thickness burns revolve around fluid control, addressing systemic inflammatory derangements, and achieving early skin coverage with acceptable cosmetic and functional results. Recent advances in the management of extensive burns include fish skin xenografts, such as Kerecis Omega-3 acellular dermal substitute. Reported to be non-allergenic and antimicrobial, this Atlantic Cod skin derivative has the potential to supplement the management of patients with large surface area burns.

There are few reports in the literature detailing the Quality of Life (QOL) of survivors with greater than 90% total body surface area (TBSA) burns. The objective was to assess two such individuals seen at our center with the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B) survey four years after discharge. Subject responses were categorized into their respective BSHS-B health domains (heat sensitivity, affect, hand function, treatment regimens, work, sexuality, interpersonal relationships, simple abilities, and body image) and a raw score was calculated for each domain.

Fibromyalgia (FM) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients contributes to increased fatigue, anxiety, depression, and mental exhaustion. This study's objective is to systematically review the literature and to determine the frequency of FM in patients with SLE and its associated factors. A literature review was conducted to assess the prevalence of FM in SLE patients and to identify FM-associated factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac myosin-specific T cells are important in causing heart problems when treated with certain cancer medications.
  • Researchers studied mouse hearts to see how these T cells act and found that they change when there's heart damage.
  • They discovered that after recovering from heart injuries, mice became more likely to develop heart issues when given these cancer drugs, and they also found similar T cells in human patients with heart problems.

The long-term consequences of obstetric sepsis have been a growing area of concern requiring attention. This narrative review summarizes the existing literature on the long-term sequelae of sepsis, with a focus on the antepartum and postpartum periods. In this article, we discuss risk factors for and epidemiology of post-sepsis syndrome (PSS) and related long-term medical conditions.

Background: Many observational studies have examined the association between statins and the incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) in high-risk populations. On the other hand, clinical trials as well as other observational studies investigated the safety and efficacy of statins in slowing disease progression in PD patients. However, the evidence has been inconclusive in both questions.

Type A aortic dissection is a life-threatening emergency requiring prompt surgical treatment. The dissection itself and use of cardiopulmonary bypass can lead to further postoperative complications, including aortic branch occlusion, thrombosis, ischemia, and fatal end-organ damage. Celiac artery occlusion with consequent hepatic malperfusion is one feared complication of aortic dissection, which requires urgent surgical intervention.
