Few centers routinely report aortic arch calcification (AAC) due to the lack of an easy and effective evaluation method. The association between AAC and the clinical prognosis of patients who undergo transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is unclear. We aimed to develop a rapid method to evaluate AAC in patients who underwent TAVR and to further assess their prognosis.

The algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) system was established to explore the effect of 1% salinity condition, determine the recovery process following salinity disturbance, and probe the impacts of two N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) on the system. Exposure to 1% salinity led to the reduction of filaments and an increase in TB-EPS contents within the ABGS system. The phosphorus removal performance of the ABGS system severely decreased at 1% salinity and did not restore fully during the subsequent recovery stage, demonstrating that salinity stress induced long-term inhibition.

Repositionable self-expanding valves allow for repositioning during deployment to achieve optimal valve placement. However, the risk of brain injury associated with repositioning, as detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), is unknown. Consecutive patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with repositionable self-expanding valves and receiving DW-MRI before and within 7 days post-TAVR procedure were included.

The rapid enrichment of anammox bacteria and its fragile resistance to adverse environment are the critical problems facing of anammox processes. As an abundant component in anammox bacteria, iron has been proved to promote the activity and growth of anammox bacteria in the mature anammox systems, but the functional and metabolic profiles in Fe(III) enhanced emerging anammox systems have not been evaluated. Results indicated that the relative abundance of functional genes involved in oxidative phosphorylation, nitrogen metabolism, cofactors synthesis, and extracellular polymers synthesis pathways was significantly promoted in the system added with 5 mg/L Fe(III) (R5).

Article Synopsis
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is considered a reliable alternative to traditional surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for patients with severe calcific aortic stenosis due to lower surgical risks.
  • However, TAVR procedures are still associated with significant complications, such as stroke, occurring in 1.4% to 4.3% of patients, which can lead to long-term disability and increased mortality.
  • Moreover, many patients experience hyperintensity cerebral ischemic lesions detected by MRI, affecting around 80% of TAVR patients, potentially leading to impaired cognitive function and an increased risk of vascular dementia.

Nanoplastics (NPs) have received global attention due to their wide application and detection in various environmental or biological media. NPs can penetrate physical barriers and accumulate in organisms after being ingested, producing a variety of toxic effects and possessing particle size-dependent effects, distinguishing them from traditional contaminants. This paper explored the neurotoxicity of polystyrene (PS)-NPs of different particle sizes on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos at environmental concentrations at the tissue and molecular levels using visualized transgenic zebrafish.

Organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) are new hydrophobic organic pollutants in the aquatic environment. When ingested by aquatic organisms, OUVFs can induce a variety of toxic effects in organisms and be transferred to offspring. However, as the main active ingredient in sunscreens, OUVFs have rarely been investigated for their melanin interference toxicity or transgenerational toxic effects on aquatic organisms and their interactive toxic effects with nanoplastics (NPs).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite related to heart disease, and aortic stenosis, focusing on its potential to predict mortality post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 299 patients with severe aortic stenosis and found that these individuals had significantly higher levels of TMAO compared to a control group.
  • Elevated TMAO levels correlated with increased mortality rates within two years following TAVR, indicating that TMAO serves as an independent predictor of poor outcomes in these patients.

Evidence for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is scarce among patients with non-calcific aortic stenosis, and it is not known whether aortic valve calcification is associated with new cerebral ischemic lesions (CILs) that are detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. So, our study enrolled 328 patients who underwent transfemoral TAVI using a self-expanding valve between December 2016 and June 2021 from the TORCH registry (NCT02803294). A total of 34 patients were finally confirmed as non-calcific AS and the remaining 294 patients were included in the calcific AS group.

With the improvement of human health awareness, the production and usage of sunscreens have increased dramatically, and their active ingredients, organic ultraviolet (UV) filters (OUVFs), have the potential to induce melanin abnormalities in aquatic organisms due to their UV-absorbing properties as they enter the aquatic environment directly with the washing of skin during water activities. In this paper, the melanin interference toxicity or transgenerational toxicity effects of typical OUVFs ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) on zebrafish (Danio rerio) were investigated based on transcriptomic sequencing technology. Results showed that EHS induced significant enrichment of the melanin-related pathway cAMP signaling pathway in parental skin tissue through UV absorption, with sensitive genes identified as melanocortin 1 receptor, protein kinase A catalytic subunit beta a, calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II delta 2, adenylate cyclase 1 and G protein subunit alpha I a.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is not the preferred therapy for pure aortic regurgitation (AR). Extremely horizontal aorta (aorta root angle ≥70°) is regarded as an "off-label" use in self-expanding TAVR. This case series enrolled 7 consecutive pure AR patients who had extremely horizontal aorta and underwent self-expanding TAVR from the TORCH registry.
