The treatment of Parkinson's disease has been moving into the focus of pharmaceutical development. Yet, the necessity for reliable model systems in the development phase has made research challenging and in vivo models necessary. We have established reliable, reproducible in vitro model systems to evaluate the binding and transport of dopamine-loaded PLGA nanoparticles for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and put the results in context with comparable in vivo results.

However, conventional polystyrene-based cell culture substrates have adverse effects on cardiomyocytes in vitro due to the stress applied by a stiff substrate on contractile cells. Ultra-high viscosity alginates offer a unique versatility as tunable substrates for cardiac cell cultures due to their biocompatibility, flexible biofunctionalization, and stability.

Plants exposed to microgravity and other conditions on the ISS display root skewing, changes in gene expression and protein abundance that may result in changes in cell wall composition, antioxidant accumulation and modification of growth anisotropy. Systematic studies that address the effects of microgravity on cellular organelles are lacking but altered numbers and sizes of vacuoles have been detected in previous flights.

To gain a deeper understanding of (patho)physiological processes affecting the BBB, sophisticated models mimicking the in vivo situation are required. Currently, most in vitro models are cultivated on stiff, semipermeable, and non-biodegradable Transwell membrane inserts, not adequately mimicking the complexity of the extracellular environment of the native human BBB.

Their tripyrrolic core structure has been modified many times in order to manipulate the spectrum of activity. We have been looking systematically at prodigiosenes substituted at the C ring with alkyl chains of different lengths, in order to assess the relevance of this substituent in a context that has not been investigated before for these derivatives: Cu(II) complexation, DNA binding, self-activated DNA cleavage, photoinduced cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity.

A wide-spread, yet not validated, assumption is that the targetome of miRNAs is non-randomly distributed across the transcriptome and that targets share functional pathways. We developed a computational and experimental strategy termed high-throughput miRNA interaction reporter assay (HiTmIR) to facilitate the validation of target pathways.

Background: The hereditary kidney disease Alport syndrome (AS) has become a treatable disease: intervention with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitors delays end stage renal failure by years. The efficiency of ACE inhibition depends on the onset of therapy-the earlier the better. Therefore, early diagnosis has become increasingly important.

The aftercare program descirbed in this paper provides a community treatment program for adult psychiatric clients that aims at facilitatin their adequate and independent adjustment to the community. The occupational therapist functions as a case manager of the treaatment team and is also program coordinator for the arts and crafts groups and the skill development groups.
