Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) represent a heterogeneous group of immature myeloid cells with immunoregulatory function in cancer and autoimmune diseases. In humans, two subsets of MDSC were determined based on the characteristic surface markers, monocytic MDSC (M-MDSC) and granulocytic MDSC (G-MDSC). Expansion of MDSC has been reported in some murine models and patients with autoimmune diseases and their immune-suppressive properties were characterized.

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by long standing hyperglycemia leading to numerous life-threatening complications. For type 1 diabetes mellitus, resulting from selective destruction of insulin producing cells by exaggerated immune reaction, the only effective therapy remains exogenous insulin administration. Despite accurate compliance to treatment of certain patients, transient episodes of hyperglycemia cannot be completely eliminated by this symptomatic treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate flower and leaf methanol extracts of Artemisia alba Turra for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity and to investigate their phenolic composition. The flower extract was richer in total phenolics and flavonoids and possessed higher antioxidant activity through DPPH and ABTS assays. The UHPLC-PDA-MS analysis of the flower and leaf methanol extracts revealed similar phenolic profile and allowed identification of 31 phenolic compounds (flavonoids, coumarins, and phenolic acids) by comparison with the respective reference compounds or tentatively characterized by their chromatographic behavior, UV patterns, and MS fragmentations.

Tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDCs) may offer an interesting intervention strategy to re-establish Ag-specific tolerance in autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes (T1D). T1D results from selective destruction of insulin-producing β cells leading to hyperglycemia that, in turn, specifically affects a patient's immune system. In this study, we prepared monocyte-derived tolDCs modulated by dexamethasone and vitamin D from 31 T1D patients with optimal glycemic control and 60 T1D patients with suboptimal glycemic control and assessed their tolerogenic properties in correlation with metabolic state of patients.

T regulatory cells (Tregs) are essential for maintaining tolerance and preventing autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes (T1D). In our study, we investigated CD25 + FoxP3 + Tregs and thymic FoxP3 + Helios + Tregs in large cohorts of children with T1D at onset and with long-term T1D, and further in their relatives and healthy controls. We observed significantly decreased numbers of CD25 + FoxP3 + Tregs, but not FoxP3 + Helios + Tregs, in long-term patients compared with the control group and T1D onset.

Introduction: The aim of this research was to, in patients with severe (tight) aortic stenosis (AoS), evaluate a) an association between clinical and some haemodynamic characteristics and natriuretic peptides (ANP, BNP) concentrations and b) usefulness of these hormones in the decision making on the next therapeutic steps.

Methods: Echocardiography and 6-minut exertion walking test were performed in 23 consecutive patients (12 men, 11 women; age 67 +/- 7 years) and 20 controls together with ANP and BNP measurements from three plasma samples before, immediately after and 20 minutes after the exertion test.

Results: There was high inter-individual variability in the ANP and BNP concentrations in patients with AoS.

Late cardiac complications in cancer survivors may develop from subclinical myocardial damage. Biochemical correlates of minimal myocardial changes can be analyzed using a commercially available rapid assay. Biomarkers are considered more sensitive markers of subclinical cardiotoxicity than conventional electrocardiographic and echocardiographic methods.

Patients with cancer are often treated with potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapeutics. Cardiotoxicity ranges from relatively benign arrhythmias to serious conditions such as myocardial ischemia/infarction, congestive heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. In spite of different diagnostic methods, with echocardiography as a gold standard, there is an intensive search for new diagnostic tools for the early detection of myocardial abnormalities.

Background: It has been convincingly established that cardiopulmonary bypass routinely used in cardiac surgery induces an oxidative stress. The extensive production of reactive oxygen species occurring during cardiopulmonary bypass has a deleterious effect on the endogenous antioxidant defense pool. The recovery of antioxidant enzyme activities as well as other antioxidatively substances is one of the important tasks for the effective defense of patients in the postoperative period.

Heart transplantation ranks among those surgical interventions associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury to the donor heart as well as to the recipient. These events are connected with increased production of reactive oxygen species which evoke metabolic, structural and functional disturbances. Twenty-four transplant patients were investigated for oxidative stress (plasma levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS) and antioxidant capacity (plasma total antioxidant status, TAS), and for activities of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) during the first year after heart transplantation.
