In recent years, total ankle replacement (TAR) has gained widespread acceptance as a surgical treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis. This shift is due to notable improvements in implant design, surgical instrumentation, technique, and surgeon expertise, resulting in high levels of patient satisfaction comparable to ankle fusion. Additionally, indications for TAR have expanded to include advanced deformities that were previously considered unsuitable for the procedure, making ankle arthrodesis the only option.

The presence of severe coronal plane deformity in the ankle joint is widely recognized as challenging to correct by total ankle joint arthroplasty alone, necessitating additional rearfoot fusion. The primary aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the potential associations between the presence or severity of coronal tibiotalar deformities and adverse outcomes after isolated total ankle arthroplasty, such as revisions and complications. Rigid pediatric pes planovalgus refers to a condition of the foot in which the medial longitudinal arch height is abnormally decreased along with a significant loss of midfoot and hindfoot motion in the pediatric patient. Known causes for this condition are well documented and consist of congenital vertical talus, tarsal coalitions, and peroneal spastic flatfoot without coalition. This article outlines conservative and surgical treatment of rigid pediatric pes planovalgus.
