Are Trace Elements Provided for Children on Long-Term Parenteral Nutrition Adequate to Meet Their Needs?

: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate whether children receiving long-term parenteral nutrition (LPN) are at risk of imbalances in selected trace elements. : Serum levels of manganese, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine were measured in 83 children on LPN and compared with 121 healthy controls. Children with signs of infection or elevated C-reactive protein levels were excluded.

Central or Peripheral Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Pediatric Sepsis: Outcomes Comparison in the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization Dataset, 2000-2021.

Objectives: Small studies of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for children with refractory septic shock (RSS) suggest that high-flow (≥ 150 mL/kg/min) venoarterial ECMO and a central cannulation strategy may be associated with lower odds of mortality. We therefore aimed to examine a large, international dataset of venoarterial ECMO patients for pediatric sepsis to identify outcomes associated with flow and cannulation site.

Design: Retrospective analysis of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) database from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2021.

Development and Evaluation of a Presenter Coaching Program at an Academic Surgical Conference.

Objective: Presenting at academic conferences is an important means of disseminating research, networking, and building a professional reputation, but the quality of presentations at conferences is often suboptimal. This project describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a presentation coaching program offered by an academic surgical society to presenters at its annual meeting.

Design: Oral presenters were paired with a coach and encouraged to meet independently, yet coaching was unstructured.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of Children's Hospital Association pediatric surgical practices. Anonymous electronic surveys were used to investigate locum tenens utilization, primary reason for use, limitations on clinical activities, and variations in practice standards or quality.

Complication Rates and Variability in Gastrojejunostomy Tube Usage in Infants and Children.

Background: Gastrojejunostomy tube (GJT) placement is commonly performed for enteral access and post-pyloric feeding in children with gastric feeding intolerance. Prior studies have suggested the risk of surgical complications is elevated in infants compared to older children. We aim to characterize GJT usage in children and investigate the risk factors for postoperative complications through two national databases.

Improvements in Therapy Experience With Evoked Compound Action Potential Controlled, Closed-Loop Spinal Cord Stimulation-Primary Outcome of the ECHO-MAC Randomized Clinical Trial.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a well-established treatment for chronic neuropathic pain. However, over- or underdelivery of the SCS may occur because the spacing between the stimulating electrodes and the spinal cord is not fixed; spacing changes with motion and postural shifts may result in variable delivery of the SCS dose and, in turn, a suboptimal therapy experience for the patient. The evoked compound action potential (ECAP)-a measure of neural activation-may be used as a control signal to adapt SCS parameters in real time to compensate for this variability.

However, there is a lack of information on PIPOx concerning the effect of molar mass () on cytotoxicity and bioimmunological properties. Here, aqueous copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (Cu-RDPR) was used for the preparation of PIPOx with defined and low dispersity.

PA12 Surface Treatment and Its Effect on Compatibility with Nutritional Culture Medium to Maintain Cell Vitality and Proliferation.

This research investigates the suitability of printed polyamide 12 (PA12) and its dyed version to support cells in bioengineering applications. For this purpose, human gingival fibroblasts (hGF06) were cultured on PA-12 scaffolds that were 3D-printed by Multi Jet Fusion (MJF). The study examined the direct cultivation of cells on MJF-printed cell culture scaffolds and the effect of leachate of PA-12 printed by MJF on the cultured cells.

Evaluation of Arsenic and Cobalt Levels in Pediatric Patients Receiving Long-Term Parenteral Nutrition.

This study continues the research in which we determined the concentration of aluminum in children receiving long-term parenteral nutrition (LPN). Since our results were interesting, we decided to assay arsenic (As) and cobalt (Co) in the collected material, which, like aluminum, constitute contamination in the mixtures used in parenteral nutrition. Excesses of these trace elements in the human body are highly toxic, and deficiencies, particularly in the case of Co, can lead to various complications.

Purpose: Lumbar interlaminar decompression with interspinous fixation is an established safe and effective treatment for spinal stenosis. Early maintenance of improvements in pain intensity and function are critical for durability of symptom relief. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of minimally invasive treatments for low back pain during the early period after treatment and their utility in setting the course for longer term success.

Unexpected Serum and Urine Aluminum Concentrations in Pediatric Patients on Home Parenteral Nutrition.

The intravenous supply of aluminum (Al) present in parenteral nutrition solutions poses a high risk of the absorption of this element, which can result in metabolic bone disease, anemia, and neurological complications. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) in children on serum Al concentration and its urinary excretion compared to healthy children. We evaluated serum Al concentrations and its urinary excretion in patients enrolled in the Polish home parenteral nutrition (HPN) program between 2004 and 2022.

Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated a variety of social inequalities within pediatric and young adult patients with solid tumors. This systematic review examines and consolidates the existing literature regarding disparities in pediatric and young adult solid tumor oncology.

Procedure: A MeSH search was performed on the following databases: MEDLINE, PubMed, OvidSP Cochrane, Central, Embase, Cinhal, and Scopus.

Infectious Complications and Antibiotic Use in Gastroschisis.

Gastroschisis is a challenging neonatal condition often with prolonged hospitalizations, need for parenteral nutrition, infectious complications, and can even result in death. Infection is reported to occur in up to two-thirds of patients with gastroschisis and is a strong risk factor for increased morbidity and mortality. Increased days with a central venous catheter, complex gastroschisis, and delayed abdominal wall closure have been consistently found to be associated with increased risk of infection, whereas sutureless gastroschisis closure has been associated with fewer infections.

Community health worker (CHW) programs are essential for expanding health services to many areas of the world and improving uptake of recommended behaviors. One of these programs, called Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), was initiated by the government of India in 2005 and now has a workforce of about 1 million. Introduction: Endoscopic surveillance guidelines for patients with repaired esophageal atresia (EA) rely primarily on expert opinion. Prior to embarking on a prospective EA surveillance registry, we sought to understand EA surveillance practices within the Eastern Pediatric Surgery Network (EPSN).

Methods: An anonymous, 23-question Qualtrics survey was emailed to 181 physicians (surgeons and gastroenterologists) at 19 member institutions.

Structural, optical, and bioimaging characterization of carbon quantum dots solvothermally synthesized from -phenylenediamine.

Carbon quantum dots as a novel type of carbon nanomaterials have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their unique optical, antibacterial, and anticancer properties as well as their biocompatibility. In this study, for the first time, carbon quantum dots were prepared from -phenylenediamine dissolved in toluene by a solvothermal route. Subsequently, the prepared carbon quantum dots were encapsulated into polyurethane films by a swelling-encapsulation-shrink method.

Introduction: This study evaluated North American pediatric surgeons' opinions and knowledge of business and economics in medicine and their perceptions of trends in their healthcare delivery environment.

Methods: We conducted an elective online survey of 1119 American Pediatric Surgical Association members. Over 8 mo, we iteratively developed the survey focused on four areas: opinion, knowledge, current practice environment, and trends in practice environment over the past 5 y.

Global patterns of migration of scholars with economic development.

We leverage metadata on over 36 million journal articles and reviews indexed by Scopus in order to estimate migration of scholars based on information on changes in their institutional affiliations over time. We produce a database of yearly international migration flows of scholars, for all countries from 1998 to 2017. We use the open-access database to provide descriptive evidence on the relationship between economic development and the emigration propensity of scholars.
