Insight into resident burnout, mental wellness, and coping mechanisms early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Acute augmentation of stress and disruption of training, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, may impact resident wellbeing.

Objectives: We investigated how residents in various specialties in the United States were impacted by COVID-19 on mental wellbeing and resilience levels, and the methodology for coping with the stress incurred.

Methods: In April 2020, the authors electronically surveyed 200 residency programs of all specialties nationally.

Active Shooter: What Would Health Care Students Do While Caring for Their Patients? Run? Hide? Or Fight?

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the clinical decisions that health care students would make if faced with an active shooter event while providing patient care.

Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to survey 245 students from 6 different professional programs. Participants read 4 case-based scenarios, selected 1 of 4 actions in a multiple-choice format, and responded to an open-ended question.

IL-17 Receptor Signaling in Oral Epithelial Cells Is Critical for Protection against Oropharyngeal Candidiasis.

Signaling through the IL-17 receptor (IL-17R) is required to prevent oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) in mice and humans. However, the IL-17-responsive cell type(s) that mediate protection are unknown. Using radiation chimeras, we were able to rule out a requirement for IL-17RA in the hematopoietic compartment.
