Background: Confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic has placed great stress on older adults, which may be affecting their quality of life. Thus, this study aims to describe the changes in mental and physical health, isolation and loneliness, residence and socioeconomic resources in a national cohort of Chilean older adults before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. It also analyzes the changes in depressive symptoms by changes in the other quality of life indicators before and during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Interactions between malnutrition, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and poverty among children living in periurban communities in Maranhao State, Northeastern Brazil.

Poverty, malnutrition and neglected tropical diseases such as soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) interact in a multi-causal feedback network. This study aimed to assess the relationships between STHs, income and nutritional status of children in impoverished communities in the city of Caxias, Maranhao State, Northeastern Brazil. A cross-sectional survey (n=259 children) was carried out with the collection of fecal samples and assessment of sociodemographic, anthropometric, dietary and sanitation data.

Several N-acylhydrazone derivatives synthesized from safrole have been found to promote intense vasodilation and antihypertensive activity. The present work describes the synthesis and antihypertensive profile of 2-thienyl-3,4-methylenedioxybenzoylhydrazone (LASSBio-1027), a new analogue of the lead compound 3,4-methylenedioxybenzoyl-2-thienylhydrazone. Thoracic aortas from Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were prepared for isometric tension recording.

Microwave-assisted synthesis and structure-activity relationships of neuroactive pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyrrolo[3,4-d]pyridine derivatives.

We described herein the optimization of the synthetic methodology exploited to obtain the pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyrrolo[3,4-d]pyridine sedative prototype 1a and novel analogues designed by successive molecular simplifications. By applying microwave irradiation during the hetero Diels-Alder key-step to obtain the heterotricyclic scaffold, under solvent-free conditions, we were able to obtain the desired compounds in drastically shorter times and better yields. Additionally, in vivo evaluation of the sedative effects of these heterocyclic derivatives showed that 1a and the novel structurally-related analogue 1e were the most efficient compounds to impair the locomotor activity in mice at the dose of 10micromol/kg.
